The scene depicted is the defense of the city of Moscow by its leaders and citizens against Napoleons' advancing armies. They had little hope of defeating Napoleon hand to hand so the governor of the city set it ablaze after the citizen's had evacuated which allowed Alexander to take a stronger position at peace talks and Napoleon and his armies eventually retreated.
