- HARD STONE DRESS CANE-Ca. 1850 -Substantial
HARD STONE DRESS CANE-Ca. 1850 -Substantial rose quartz knob wheel cut in a reversed teardrop pommel shape and presented on a longer silver collar with twin ring borders embellished with four applied repeating bloom panels topped by what seems to be pelicans. -The overall profile of the knob with apparent similarities to the hookah mouthpieces as well as its faceting with soft edged broad panels bundling at the top in a beautiful eight-sided centering Islamic geometrical octagon panel are in the Ottoman taste and suggest a French or Swiss custom order for that part of the world. -Endowed with an addicting sensorial feel, this “touch the difference” knob comes with a most magnificently figured and richly hued snake wood shaft, the king of all woods, and a plain silver ferrule. -An excessively rare relic of the Ottoman culture, when Istanbul ruled an empire, this cane is literally a wearable treasure and in superb flawless condition. -H. 4 ½” x 1 ½”, O.L. 38” -$1,000-$1,500 -There has been a great many number of publications on Ottoman art where utilitarian objects are illustrated, mainly hookah mouthpieces with comparable profiles from the Tokpaki Serail Palace Museum in Istanbul. -Pelicans have a popular limerick attached to them, which states that the large pouch of their beak can hold more than their belly. These huge water birds are skilled fliers as well as swimmers. In addition to the avian world, they’ve also built a name for themselves in the spiritual world. -Rose quartz is said to balance the emotions, thus giving inner peace and harmony and helps initiate one’s sensitivity to beauty, art and music. It is supposed to calm aggression and resentment while increasing self-esteem and self-confidence and to enhance one’s compassion, patience and forgiveness. Historically a symbol of love and beauty, rose quartz is also believed to increase your capacity to love others and yourself.
