ATTRIBUTED TO FELIX FRANÇOIS GEORGESATTRIBUTED TO FELIX FRANÇOIS GEORGES PHILIBERT ZIEM (FR...attributed to FELIX FRANÇOIS GEORGES PHILIBERT ZIEM (French 1821-1911) A PAINTING, "View of Ships in the Bosphorus Strait with the Hagia Sophia in Distance, Istanbul," oil on canvas, signed L/L, "Ziem;" 23 1/2" x 32", framed 28 1/2" x 37". Note: The present painting is attributed as a view of the continental boundaries between Europe and Asia known as the Bosphorus Strait, which separates ancient Anatolia and Thrace. At right of the horizon rises the Hagia Sophia, a Roman Empire era sacred religious architectural site. For nearly two millennia the area has served as a religious, governmental and secular merchant market, but most importantly as a contested geographical, military and maritime zone; controversial even during Ferdinand Felix Francois Philibert Ziem's lifetime. The view of the present painting is most likely from a boat traversing the waters of the Bosphorus. Ziem at the age of thirty six from 1857-1858 embarked on a life changing trip touring Egypt and the Ottoman Empire. The travel to exotic location would conscript Ziem as one of the world's most influential orientalist artists. Devotion to orientalism permeated his oeuvre for the next fifty four years until his own sun set in 1911. A lifetime of beautiful 19th century sunsets and sunrises were recorded by Ziem; his works are housed in the finest museums and private collection the world over.
Condition:
Yellowing and tone to varnish, a streak at left, old lined canvas, frame rubbing and white accretion, losses and inpainting.
