- LOETZ GUSTAV GURSCHNER (AUSTRIA 1873-1970)
LOETZ GUSTAV GURSCHNER (AUSTRIA 1873-1970) FLOOR LAMPDESCRIPTION: Gustav Gurschner (Austria 1873-1970) An Austrian Art Nouveau gilt bronze and glass telescopic floor lamp, designed by Gustav Gurschner. Lamp features a blue iridized oil spot Loetz glass shaft and dome base. Further decorated with gilt bronze Art Nouveau floral and figural decoration throughout. Complete with a Loetz decorated iridized mushroom form shade. Featuring the swooping, organic lines typical to the Art Nouveau movement, his objects are distinctly ornate and decorative, as seen in his large Figural Bronze Lamp of a woman carrying a lantern. Born on September 28, 1873 in Mühldorf, Germany, Gurschner went on to study at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna in 1888. He developed an interest in Art Nouveau after visiting Paris in 1897, and later exhibited with the Vienna Secession—a group of Austrian artists who had resigned from the Association of Austrian Artists—which included the artists and designers Gustav Klimt and Koloman Moser. Today, Gurschner’s works can be found in the collections of the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York, the Corning Museum of Glass, and the Petit Palais in Paris. He died on August 2, 1970 in Vienna, Austria. Gurschner studied under August Kühne and Otto König at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna, and under Valgrin in Paris. He married the writer Alice Pollak in 1897. In 1898, he participated in the inaugural exposition of the Vienna Secession. From 1904 to 1908, he was part of the Hagenbund, a group of like-minded Austrian artists. CIRCA: Early 20th Ct. - RARE "DONE IN THE OPEN" FREDERIC REMINGTON
RARE "DONE IN THE OPEN" FREDERIC REMINGTON 1902Presented in this lot is the Rare "Done in the Open, Drawings by Frederick Remington", 1902 copyright Robert Howard Russell, P. F. Collier & Son Publisher, New York. "Done In The Open drawings by Frederic Remington with an introduction and verses by Owen Wister and others" is a fascinating, early 20th-century collection of outdoor sketches by Frederic Remington and a verse collection published by American author Owen Wister. The book contains 72 Frederic Remington art pieces with a few in color. The piece shows 12 double page drawings, 28 full page drawings, and 32 smaller drawings. Each of the drawings is accompanied by the art’s title and a verse or poem about the piece. The book was a collaboration with the artist, Frederic Sackrider Remington, the verses being written to accompany Remington's drawings. Remington was an American painter, illustrator, sculptor, and writer who specialized in the genre of Western American Art. His works are known for depicting the Western United States in the last quarter of the 19th century and featuring such images as cowboys, American Indians, and the US Cavalry. Remington's collaboration with Wister on The Evolution of the Cowpuncher, published by Harper's Monthly in September 1893, was the first statement of the mythical cowboy in American literature, spawning the entire genre of Western fiction, films, and theater that followed. Remington provided the concept of the project, its factual content, and its illustrations and Wister supplied the stories, sometimes altering Remington's ideas. Remington's prototype cowboys were Mexican rancheros but Wister made the American cowboys descendants of Saxons. In truth, they were both partially right, as the first American cowboys were both the ranchers who tended the cattle and horses of the American Revolutionary Army on Long Island and the Mexicans who ranched in the Arizona and California territories. Remington was one of the first American artists to illustrate the true gait of the horse in motion (along with Thomas Eakins), The galloping horse became Remington's signature subject, which was copied and interpreted by many Western artists who followed him to adopt the correct anatomical motion. Though criticized by some for his use of photography, Remington often created depictions that slightly exaggerated natural motion to satisfy the eye. He wrote that "the artist must know more than the camera... (the horse must be) incorrectly drawn from the photographic standpoint (to achieve the desired effect). Also, noteworthy was Remington's invention of "cowboy" sculpture. From his inaugural piece, "The Bronco Buster", he created an art form which is still very popular among collectors of Western art. He has been called the "Father of Cowboy Sculpture." This Cream-colored boards hardcover is in fair overall condition, the front cover decorated with the Remington portrait, "Infantry Soldier", a cloth backstrip on the spine. Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks. Intact pages exhibit age tanning, tears. Covers and spine are dirty. Quite a bit of edge wear is evident, including crushed spine ends and exposed board at corners. Inner hinge is cracked and a little loose. Some interior gutters are cracked. Inside pages exhibit occasional edge wear. Measures 11.5"W x 16.5"L x .5"D.

World Below the Brine, identified on exhibition label verso, mixed media on Masonite, 18 x 20 in.; original distressed painted wood frame, 25-5/8 x 27-3/4 in.
Provenance: Estate of Brock Arms, Flat Rock, North Carolina
Note: Alice F. Mason, not to be confused with Alice Trumbull Mason, exhibited in the Chicago area from circa 1937 into the 1950s. She exhibited both at the Art Institute of Chicago and in the important protest, Exhibition Momentum, Her title for this work is taken from Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman."When the Art Institute of Chicago banned undergraduate works from eligibility for its annual ?Artists of Chicago and Vicinity? exhibition, Exhibition Momentum was born to give those young artists a place to show their work. In the inaugural catalogue, the introduction states that Exhibition Momentum will aid in ?retaining artists in Chicago who might ordinarily be forced to seek recognition elsewhere.? Indeed, many young artists trained in Chicago moved away soon after their schooling to seek greater exposure in New York. Ironically, Leon Golub, one of the founders of Exhibition Momentum, was among them." -Archives of American Art

J. CRAIG THORPE (B. 1948) "OHIO LOCOMOTIVE"J. Craig Thorpe (American, B. 1948) "Ohio Locomotive" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Paper.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood Legendary Locomotives of the 50 States Ohio Commemorative Cover postmarked June 12, 1995.
During the predawn hours of June 12, 1905, engineer Jerry McCarthy received a call imploring him to make up time on the Pennsylvania Special's much-publicized inaugural run. McCarthy was assigned to engine No. 7002 and given the formidable task of shaving time off the next leg of the westbound trip. Because the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne & Chicago Railway (a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad) was locked in a speed war with its rival, the New York Central, a timely run was imperative. Both companies were vying to trim their Chicago-to-New York schedules to 18 hours. While McCarthy was pulling out all the stops with No. 7002, switch-tower operators compared timings and estimated his train's speed along a three-mile stretch between AY Tower and Elida, Ohio. Although they concluded that the engineer had achieved a world-record speed of 127.1 miles per hour, it is now believed that this finding was speculative at best. Nonetheless, McCarthy was traveling at a tremendous clip and did indeed make up a sizable amount of time on the lagging Pennsylvania Special's maiden run. In this painting, No. 7002 is steaming across flat lands in western Ohio. This storied E2-class 4-4-2 engine was built in the Pennsylvania Railroad's Juniata Works in 1902. To avoid confusion with its similarly-named Pennsylvania Limited, the Pennsy in November 1912 renamed the Special to become its flagship Broadway Limited -- a name it has held ever since.

- MARGARET MELLIS INK PAINTING WITH CIGARETTEMargaret
MARGARET MELLIS INK PAINTING WITH CIGARETTEMargaret Mellis (Scottish born in China, 1914-2009). Ink painting with collaged cigarette, n.d. Inscribed "El Cigarillo y el Arte, Despues de Ferryfrost / London Oct. MM MA" at lower right. A fascinating piece by Margaret Mellis featuring two long-lashed eyes delineated in indigo blue ink, the eye to the right presenting the word "ART" on the sclera, as well as an actual cigarette collaged to the left of the composition with lyrical passages of yellow and pink ink suggesting light radiating from the cigarette butt, swirling plumes of smoke, and a heart surrounding the "ART" eye. The inscription below reads, "El Cigarillo y el Arte, Despues de Ferryfrost" suggesting enjoying a cigarette after partaking in a "Ferryfrost" - perhaps Mellis' alternative word for sex. A whimsical artwork by Margaret Mellis mounted under glass in a custom frame. Size: 5.875" L x 7.875" W (14.9 cm x 20 cm)
About the artist: "Born in 1914, in China, Margaret Mellis and her family returned to Scotland soon after her birth. She studied at Edinburgh College of Art, where she was taught by SJ Peploe and WG Gillies, and learnt alongside Wilhelmina Barns-Graham and William Gear. In 1933, she went to Paris to study under Andre Lhote, followed by another visit in 1937. In between, in 1936, she met Adrian Stokes; the couple married in 1938. Together, they moved to St Ives, Cornwall, arguably heralding the next wave of artists to the area, with Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth, Naum Gabo, Terry Frost, Patrick Heron, and Roger Hilton. Before this, she studied for a time at the Euston Road School, before fleeing to Cornwall following the outbreak of war. This move to St Ives coincided with Mellis exploring collage and relief. Created from found materials and paper, these collages were exhibited in New Movements in Art, at the London Museum in 1942. In 1946, following her divorce from Stokes, Mellis met the artist Francis Davison, with whom she moved to London, and then to Cap d' Antibes, in 1947. They married in 1948, and relocated to Walberswick, and later Syleham, Norfolk, in 1950, and then to Suffolk. For much of this time, though both continued to create artworks, neither was widely exhibited in London - they were geographically and, at times, conceptually, distant from life in the capital. This began to change, after Mellis embarked upon a series of large abstract paintings known as 'colour structures'. These were exhibited in London, with solo shows at Grabowski Gallery, in 1969, and then at Basil Jacobs Gallery, in 1972. From both shows, Mellis sold work to important public collections; the Government Art Collection bought a painting from the Basil Jacobs show, in 1972, while a painting had earlier been purchased by the Arts Council of Great Britain, in 1969.
In 1978, Mellis started creating driftwood reliefs, which she found while walking along the local coast at Southwold, and likened the creative process to Surrealist automatism. In the mid-'80s, Mellis was included in several high-profile exhibitions, including the important survey show of St Ives 1939-64, staged at the Tate Gallery, London, in 1985, and later Scottish Art since 1900, at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh. In 1987, the Redfern Gallery staged a retrospective exhibition, from which the Tate and Arts Council bought recent driftwood reliefs. The exhibition was also attended by a young Damien Hirst; intrigued by the driftwood constructions in particular, Hirst wrote to the artist, and was invited to visit Mellis in Southwold, forming a lasting friendship. Mellis was part of the Tate St Ives' inaugural exhibition in 1993, and was the subject of a retrospective that opened at City Art Centre, Edinburgh, and toured the UK, in 1997. Recent exhibitions include Modern Scottish Women 1885-1965, at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, and a joint-show with Damien Hirst at Pier Arts Centre, Orkney. In 2018, her work featured in an exhibition inspired by Virginia Woolf and her writings, at Tate St Ives." (Redfern Gallery website)

EXHIBITED MARGARET MELLIS PASTEL - "BIG BURDOCK LEAF"Margaret Mellis (Scottish born in China, 1914-2009). "Big Burdock Leaf" pastel on envelope, n.d. Initialed "M.M." twice at lower left and once at lower right. Exhibition label on verso. A wonderful pastel composition on a deconstructed paper envelope by Margaret Mellis mounted behind glass in a custom frame. The composition is true to its title, depicting a bouquet of colorful flowers displayed in a glass vase before a massive Burdock leaf. All is delineated in Mellis' signature expressive style, and a label on the verso indicates that this piece was exhibited at Gainsborough's House Sudbury Suffolk, August 22 to October 18, 1992. In addition to Mellis' undeniable artistry, unique style and format, the theme of this piece is particularly symbolic as Burdock is associated with abundance and has been used in rituals to bring about vitality, prosperity, and virility. Size (artwork): 12" L x 15.5" W (30.5 cm x 39.4 cm) Size (frame): 19.2" L x 22.25" W (48.8 cm x 56.5 cm)
