- BLUE AND WHITE JACQUARD COVERLET Running
BLUE AND WHITE JACQUARD COVERLET Running deer, American eagle, and Capitol building.Archibald Davidson (b. 1771), proprietor of the Ithaca Carpet Factory, wove this blue and white, Figured and Fancy, double- cloth coverlet in 1838. This centerfield design features a stylized “Double Tulip” carpet medallion motif offset by floral diamond motifs. The coverlet features borders along three side. The two side borders are composed of an adorned “Stag and Tree,” and the bottom border is composed of a more developed Independence Hall and Great Seal Eagle border found on earlier Davidson coverlets. In the lower two corners, the words "Woven at the Ithaca Carpet Factory by Arch'd Davidson 1838" appear. Catalog Note: Archibald Davidson was born in Scotland in 1771, where he was trained as a weaver. He married Jane McPhail on December 10, 1795 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and they had five sons, one born in Pennsylvania and the other four in New Jersey. They later lived in both Tompkins and Warsaw Counties, New York. Davidson died January 5, 1854. This coverlet is composed of two panels woven as one length, cut, and sewn together to create the finished width. - GEORGE BRYANT SIGNED PAYMENT DOCUMENT,
GEORGE BRYANT SIGNED PAYMENT DOCUMENT, 1779 Revolutionary War dated original Manuscript Document Signed, "Geo. Bryant," at Philadelphia, PA. George Bryant (1731-1791), Vice President of Pennsylvania (analogous to Lieutenant-Governor) 1777-1779. Payment document signed by him as vice president of Pennsylvania, at the state house later known as Independence Hall. Bryant was born in Dublin, Ireland, and came to Philadelphia in1752. As an active Presbyterian, Bryan in the late 1750s and early 1760s played a role in trying to hold together two factions that had emerged during the Great Awakening. This struggle led him into provincial politics where he fought the proprietors and the strong Quaker faction that sought to make Pennsylvania a royal colony. When the Stamp Act was passed in 1765, Bryan helped resist the oppressive act by joining other Philadelphia merchants in signing the Non-Importation agreement. This action likely contributed to his bankruptcy in 1771. After Pennsylvania adopted a new state constitution in 1776, he became an advocate of the radical unicameral government. In the new government, Bryan served from 1777-1779 as Vice-President of the Supreme Executive Council. In 1779 he was appointed a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania.
- REVOLUTIONARY WAR, INDEPENDENCE HALL
REVOLUTIONARY WAR, INDEPENDENCE HALL PAY DOCUMENT Revolutionary War pay order for repairs to the Assembly Room of the Statehouse, later to be named Independence Hall. ADS, 1 page. Dated February 13, 1779 in Philadelphia to State Treasurer David Rittenhouse (1732-1796), famous astronomer and clockmaker. To pay Charles Schultz on order sixty pounds, two shillings and six pence, in full for sundry iron work for the Assembly Room. Darkly signed by John Bayard (1738-1807), as Speaker of the House of the Assembly. Schultz receipt at lower right. Both Bayard and Rittenhouse were members of the Committee of Safety and the Constitutional Convention. Bayard was a member of the Sons of Liberty and as Colonel served at the Battles of Brandywine, Germantown and Princeton. The fledgling American government returned to the State house in July 1778 after the British occupation seven months earlier. The State house later became known as Independence Hall due to the keen interest shown by the Marquis de Lafayette in his visit to Philadelphia during his farewell tour in 1824, wanting to see the 'Hall of Independence' which he deemed sacred to the cause of liberty. The Assembly Room to which this document refers, so important to American history, is pictured on the reverse side of the US two-dollar bill, from the original painting by John Trumbull entitled 'Declaration of Independence.'

I have said he, often and often in the course of the Session, and the vicissitudes of my hopes and fears as to its issue, looked at that behind the President without being able to tell whether it was rising or setting: But now at length I have the happiness to know that it is a rising and not a setting Sun" (https://www.ushistory.org/more/sun.htm).
