- French Relief-Cast Metal Architectural
French Relief-Cast Metal Architectural Plaque, possibly an illustration of a journey's beginning by Stanley and Livingstone, early 20th century, with a bronze patinated-type surface, featuring a beautifully cast and detailed narrative portraying Africans, including women and children on a beach with tent and palm trees, European gentlemen consulting a map and pointing the way while the Africans form a procession loaded with goods on their backs, and an African mother and baby beckoning the way with the eclipsing sun on the horizon, h. 9-3/4", w. 42-1/2". Possibly originally part of an architectural frieze with this section representative of a complete narrative; the clothing and particularly the hats on the two African men are reminiscent of a style known to be from the Ivory Coast of Africa. Of additional interest is that David Livingstone arrived in Africa in 1840 with two goals: to explore the continent and to end the slave trade. In 1864 he returned to Africa and mounted an expedition in the hopes of discovering the source of the Nile River.
