A Papua New Guinea Je Stone DaniA Papua New Guinea Je Stone Dani Tribe Early 19th Century Flat slate stone with pointed and blunted ends center having braided fiber bands in tan red and green with attached fur pelts bark and reed shafts overall 23-1/2"L. Used by the Dani tribe the je stones were made of slate and were usually flat and elongated. The stones were imported from the Jalemo people who live northeast of the Balim Valley and are grey green and black in color. Many are decorated with fur tufts braided strands of bark fiber yellow colored braided orchid fiber feathers or cloth around the middle of the stone. Used in ceremonial payments for funerals brides and commercial activities.

The stones were imported from the Jalemo people who live northeast of the Balim Valley and are grey green and black in color. Many are decorated with fur tufts braided strands of bark fiber yellow colored braided orchid fiber feathers or cloth around the middle of the stone. Used in ceremonial payments for funerals brides and commercial activities. This stone has no such additional decoration and measures 13-1/2"L.
