Antique English necessaire dressing case, c 1845, bocote wood veneer, sterling silver lids bearing mark of Thomas Diller, London, 1845, contents include (4) bottles, (2) square jars, (2) paneled jars, (3) rectangular boxes, traveling inkwell, awl, scissors, buttonhook, corkscrew, bodkin, toothpick, nail file, mother of pearl penknife, the center tray removes to reveal additional storage space. The lock is signed J Bramah, 124 Piccadilly, no key. Joseph Bramah started out by training as a cabinet-maker. In 1784, after attending some lectures on lock making, he patented his first lock and in the same year set up the Bramah Locks Company at 124 Piccadilly, London. The firm still operates under that name today. The velvet interior of the lid needs some repair, Some of the brass string inlay is a bit loose. The box is accompanied by the original receipt from Penhaligon's of London, purchased in November of 1985 for 1,275 British Pounds.
