A Satsuma Geisha Samurai Cup and Saucer Meiji The western shape cup measures apprx. 3-3/4"D x 1-7/8"H with a small foot and the saucer measures apprx. 5-1/2"D also with a small foot. Both are similarly decorated with minutely detailed figures and geometric designs with a great deal of gilt highlighting. Both signed "Gyokushu Painter" on the underside.

All pieces hand painted in polychrome with gilt highlights on gilt background with brocade accents depicting courtly scenes. Both cups have extensive calligraphy texts inside and the bottle has similar text around the shoulders. All pieces signed by calligraphers and marked with gold-tone characters on iron red cartouches underneath.

the first a ovoid form teapot, the exterior decorated with Mount Fuji above rushing waves, the mouth rim and the cover enameled with gilt highlights showing foliate scrolls against a black ground, the underside bearing a five-character mark in gilt; the second a large plate with the interior showing a riverscape scene with pagodas, the underside bearing a seven-character marker's mark.

This textured glaze covers the entire outer surface of the tea cup. which has a westernized handle and a smooth white porcelain interior. There¡¯s a black inscription on the underside of the cup. D: 2.9 by 1.9 in (7.15 by 4.73 cm) Condition: The rim of the cup has been restored.
