The figure is ornamented in traditional motifs associated with NW Coast carvings, and the mouth is set with what appear to be elk teeth or perhaps other fossilized pieces of some other origin. The artist's carved signature is found on the underside.Gary Rice is a very well-known Kwakiutl carver of totem poles, masks and other traditional crafts. Records indicate his birth date as 1935 or 1939.Measures 13.5 x 6.75 x 3.5 inches.Very good condition throughout, no damage, repair or heavy wear.Provenance: The Susan Koehn Estate Trust Newton, Kansas

Born in Morocco, he immigrated to Israel's Kfar Blum kibbutz in 1951. After serving in the Israeli Six Day War, he returned to his painting studio in the community of Kfar Blum and was soon commissioned by the Organization Kibbutzim to be their official state designer. He moved to the U.S. in 1981 and continued his work there.Amram Ebgi's lithographs are extremely detailed and colorful, and the artist has been known to spend up to two months on a single piece.
