Negatives measure 8" x 10", early 20th century, from the Eugene Terway collection. Oliver Cromwell Applegate (1845-1938) was born and raised in Oregon, a member of the Applegate family, which was known for helping to open the Applegate Trail. Applegate was an Indian agent for Oregon, a newspaper editor, and played a prominent role in the Modoc War. Joaquin Miller (Cincinnatus Heine Miller, 1837-1913) was nicknamed "Poet of the Sierras" and grew up in Oregon and Northern California. Miller had quite the varied past from living on reservations to being a cook, a lawyer, a judge, an author, and a horse thief.
