Restored, re-lined with backing paper and de-acidified by Archival Restoration Associates, Philadelphia, in 1973.

JAMES ABBOTT MCNEILL WHISTLER (1834-1903, MA,England) lithograph 1896, "Evening Little Waterloo Bridge", 1896, Levy 165, Spink 155, Way 119. Signed in plate lower right. Plate size 6" x 9". Housed in a custom made Guido (Boston) frame, 19 1/2" x 23 1/4". Good condition, has not been removed from the frame. Provenance: Swann Auction Galleries, 10/27/2010, hammer price $1, 100. This is a very scarce lithograph. Waterloo Bridge is one of 8 lithographs drawn by Whistler while he and his wife, Beatrix, resided at the Savoy Hotel in London in February and March of 1896. Beatrix had been diagnosed with cancer in 1894 and was ill through 1895. She died on the 10th of May, 1896. Whistler's years of Beatrix, who he nicknamed Trixie, were among the happiest of his life. The rooms at the Savoy Hotel were on the top floor overlooking the Thames. He spent his time at his beloved wife's bedside drawing from the balconies of their suite.

WATERCOLOUR, QUéBEC CITADEL, DATED 1848In the manner of William James Colville, a watercolour on card, “Québec Citadel, 1848”, monogrammed bottom right “WJC”. Colville was a British officer of the Rifle Brigade posted to Québec City 1846-1850 (see Christie's (Canada) Catalogue March 26th1970, Lot No.1). Colville would have been a Lieutenant at this time. He rose to Major by 1855 serving in the Crimean Campaign. Provenance: Ex: Esmond Butler Collection (1922-1989). 9.75" x 7".
