- SID LORRAINE'S FRASNIA ACT CASE AND
SID LORRAINE'S FRASNIA ACT CASE AND PROPSLorraine, Sid (Sid R. Johnson). Sid Lorraine's Frasnia Act Case and Props. Circa 1960. Box-like suitcase custom made by Sid Lorraine for his trademark medicine pitch act called Frasnia. The lid of the case opens to reveal a sign heralding the name of the act, and the interior is filled with tiny foam-line compartments for the various props used in the act with tiny foam-lined 17 x 13 x9Ó. Well worn from considerable professional use. Accompanied by the felt hat Lorraine wore while giving the pitch, a bottles of ÒKlondike whiskeyÓ used by Lorraine in his act, Frasnia stationery, other memorabilia, and two photographs of Lorraine performing the act, one of which shows the case. With Lorraine's address label attached to the handle. Lorraine made a spectacle of his medicine pitch Ð in his case, the ÒmedicineÓ was a miracle substance called Frasnia. As Lorraine recited the lines of his script Ð ostensibly selling the medicine to the crowd he performed for, incorporating various magic tricks and jokes in the spiel Ð his voice became more and more hoarse. Near the end of the routine, barely able to talk, nearly everyone watching the performer hoped that someone Ð anyone Ð would give the man a glass of water. However, as a fitting denoument, Lorraine did little more than sip from a bottle of the miracle substance itself, and voila! Ð his voice was good as new. It was a masterful theatrical and comedic performance long-remembered by those who saw Lorraine perform it.

MEL CRAWFORD B. 1925) "YUKON" ORIGINALMel Crawford (Canadian, B. 1925) "Yukon" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Cold Press Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 17c Flags of Canada Yukon stamp issued June 15, 1979.
Like much of the Canadian west, the Yukon Territory was first explored by fur traders of the Hudson's Bay Company. With the discovery of gold in 1873, settlements were established along the Yukon and Stewart Rivers. In 1895, the Territory was incorporated into the newly-organized Northwest Territories along with the rest of the former Hudson's Bay Company lands, and the Northwest Mounted Police were dispatched to the region to maintain Canadian law. When a rich gold strike was made in the Klondike region in 1896, the real modern history of the Yukon began. Thousands of gold seekers swarmed into the Yukon from all over Canada and the United States, and the rough-and-ready reputation of the territory began to spread throughout the world. In 1898, an Act of Parliament separated the Yukon Territory from the Northwest Territories, and established local control over most questions of administration in the Territorial Capital at Whitehorse. By the end of the gold rush, in 1901, the Territory's population had risen to more than twenty-seven thousand. Twenty years later, barely over four thousand people remained in the Territory. Today, there are still fewer than thirty thousand people in the whole Territory. But the Yukon will continue to grow and to prosper, because its rich lands have the resources that the more developed lands to the east and south need: lead, zinc, copper, nickel, asbestos, cadmium, tungsten, coal, gold, and silver are but a few of the resources that the Yukon has in abundance.

- 1906 JACK LONDON "WHITE FANG," 1ST EDITIONNorth
1906 JACK LONDON "WHITE FANG," 1ST EDITIONNorth America, United States, New York, ca. 1906 CE. BAL 11896; Sisson & Martens, p. 29. Wow! A first edition of one of Jack London's most famous novels! A fine second issue of "White Fang" written by Jack London (American, 1876 to 1916) and published by The Macmillan Company in 1906. Comprised of 327 pages and 8 color plates by Charles Livingston Bull (American, 1874 to 1932), the famous novel features its original pale green cloth hardcover stamped in black and white lettering with an illustration of a wolf beneath a full moon on the front cover, as well as gilt lettering along the spine. The enthralling tale explores themes of morality and redemption, detailing the journeys of White Fang - a wild wolfdog - through the Yukon and Northwest territories as he transforms from an untamed member of an arctic wolfpack to the domesticated canine of a Californian aristocrat. It was intended as an autobiographical allegory based on London's metamorphosis from a teenage delinquent to a married, middle-class author. Size: 5.3" L x 1.4" W x 7.8" H (13.5 cm x 3.6 cm x 19.8 cm)
Born John Griffith Chaney, Jack London was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist who became one of the first American authors to gain international celebrity status. Considered an innovator of science fiction, London was a passionate advocate of unionization, workers' rights, and socialism. He is most famous for writing "The Call of the Wild" and "White Fang," both set in the Klondike Gold Rush which London joined at the age of 21 in 1897.

- CHARLES WILLIAM DAHLGREEN, ILLINOIS,
CHARLES WILLIAM DAHLGREEN, ILLINOIS, INDIANA (1864 - 1955), THE CALL OF WINTER, OIL ON BOARD, 23"H X 29 1/8"W, 29"H X 35"W (FRAME)Charles William Dahlgreen, Illinois, Indiana, (1864 - 1955) The Call of Winter, oil on board Signed lower right. Biography from the Archives of askART: Chicago native Charles W. Dahlgreen was born on September 8, 1864. After working in commercial art as a painter of banners and emblems and trying his hand at prospecting in the Klondike, Dahlgreen decided at age forty to study art seriously and to become a painter. Dahlgreen enrolled at the Art Institute of Chicago where he worked under John H. Vanderpoel, Frederick Freer, and Wellington J. Reynolds. Already in 1906 he was exhibiting his paintings at the Art Institute (he continued to show over one hundred works there until 1943). Around 1908 he moved on to study with Charles F. Browne and the portrait painter John C. Johansen. A year later he sought more training in Düsseldorf, choosing Germany rather than France, as did many midwestern art students. Dahlgreen was a student at a time when American impressionism was at its peak and he must have absorbed that movement's theories at home and on the Continent. Dahlgreen worked en plein air, as did most of his generation of landscapists. He visited Brown County, Indiana as early as 1914; during the 1930s he was photographed in front of his curious truck-studio. Dahlgreen also went to the Southwest but his activity there remains uninvestigated. An interesting still-life entitled Breakfast Table (ca. 1934) shows Dahlgreen's experimental side and proves that he was no opponent of modernism (illustrated in Logan, 1937, p. 111). There is a tension between naturalistic spatial construction and cubist-inspired abstraction. Dahlgreen's success as a landscape painter and etcher can be measured by the number of awards he earned beginning in 1915 with an Honorable Mention at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. There, thirty-one of his prints were on display. His work can be seen in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Decatur (Illinois) Art Center, the Vanderpoel Art Association Collection in Chicago, and the Museum of Science and Art in Los Angeles. By the time Dahlgreen died in 1955, he had spent fifty years in his second career as a painter, working in Chicago and its Oak Park suburb. So fond was Dahlgreen of Brown County that he instructed his ashes to be spread at the foot of his favorite giant oak tree there (Letsinger-Miller, 1994, p. 183). He had taught at the Art Institute of Chicago and became a member of various local art societies: the Art Service League of Chicago, Art Students League of Chicago, Chicago Painters and Sculptors, the Chicago Society of Etchers, and the Chicago Gallery of Art. Dahlgreen passed away in 1955. Sources: "At 40 Charles Dahlgreen Took Up Art," Art Digest 2 (1 April 1928): 6; Thompson, A. History of Art in Illinois. Exh. cat.
