Sioux Fully Beaded Saddle Blanket c. 1850-1880: This is an exceptional historic Sioux Native American Indian fully beaded saddle blanket dating to circa 1850-1880. The piece has been examined by a renowned Native American 19th Century beadwork expert in Billings, Montana and was confirmed as being pre-1890 and possibly as early as circa 1850. The saddle blanket shows an early presumably U. S. Army or U. S. Bureau of Indian Affairs tent canvas fabric construction with Indian tanned hide fully beaded sections sewn along the borders. The horse saddle blanket is predominantly sinew sewn with some trade cotton thread sewing. The piece shows a multicolored polychrome traditional geometric design done in period correct beadwork of all glass trade seed beads. The beads include such opaque and translucent colors as chalk white, semi-transparent red, red, semi-transparent sky padre blue, cobalt, and medium blue. Provenance: The piece was purchased from a large Wyoming Native American artifact and weapons collection by a large western and Native American antiquities collector in Billings, Montana. The blanket shows a fantastic geometric wide border that continues around eight inches past the bottom edge and is accented by around eight inches of hand cut Indian tanned hide fringe that is adorned with solid brass hawk trade bells. The saddle blanket is mirrored and beaded on both sides with slight bead loss and original patina, a true sign of its early age and use. The piece is in fine preserved museum quality condition for its early age and is one of the more intricately beaded saddle blankets offered for public sale. Fully Beaded Sioux horse saddle blankets from the 19th Century are exceedingly rare with examples of the same quality and similar age as the piece offered in this lot selling for such large amounts as $12, 000 from Cisco’s Gallery, $24, 600 for the Lakota Beaded Saddle Blanket sold by Skinner Inc. 3/14/2015 auction, and $7, 170 for the Sioux Saddle Blanket sold by Heritage Auctions in their 11/10/2007 auction. Measures overall ___”L x ___”W. The beadwork strips are __”W. Condition For a complete representation of condition and for additional images please call 800-686-4216. Sioux Beaded Parfleche Horse Saddle c. 1900's: The lot features a unique parfleche rawhide covered horse saddle with beadwork accents attributed to the Sioux Native American Indians. The saddle is thought to date to circa early-to-mid 1900's. The piece shows a traditional built Sioux pattern saddle showing a wooden saddle tree having a high horn and cantle with the entire piece being covered in Great American Bison Buffalo parfleche rawhide that is sinew sewn. The horn and cantle both show a rectangle drop of dark blue trade clothe that shows a tepee like pictorial glass trade seed beaded design in chalk white. The saddle also shows the original seat cover with two hide wrapped stirrups. Provenance: From a large Great Falls, Montana Native American Indian artifacts and weapons collection. Measures overall 23"L x 16" (from the bottom of the saddle tree to the top of the horn) the stirrups sit 32"H (from the top of the seat to the bottom of the stirrups). The saddle has a 13" seat. The tree is very narrow. Condition For a complete representation of condition and for additional images please call 800-686-4216. FABULOUS CARVED ARMORED PARKER CAROUSEL FIGURE. Colors are vibrant, playful and spirited with red, green, yellow, blue, purple, white, black, gold and orange. This jumper horse has a cropped or roached mane with glass jewels embracing the outer rim and the horse’s face on the romance side or show side. The trapping or caparison is highly detailed. The romance side has fish scale armor with every scale in a contrasting different color trimmed yet again in another color. As would be expected for a horse in armor he has a spear on the front of his head with two rings. There are elegant yet playful scrolls embracing the horses’ face armor and around his body below his neck. There is a round red shield with a gold painted crown in the center on the front of the horse below his head. The horses’ teeth and tongue, like everything else here, is very well detailed and pronounced with white teeth and a slightly lolling red tongue. The saddle blanket is so intricately detailed it is hard to put into words. Again it has the fish scale style design with a patriotic star surrounded by a green, yellow and red border finishing off with a free flowing fringe. The saddle itself has great shape and color with deeply carved tobacco leaves on the cantle. There is a decorative medallion on the romance side with flying birds around the outer edge with a Victorian woman in a wild plume feather hat in the center. Underneath all the colorful armor and the saddle blanket you have a striking statuesque black horse with a highly carved white tail. This carousel horse dates from the early 1900’s and judging form his size and detailed beauty he was a front row horse. It is mounted underneath by the original iron pole on to a modern wood base. The horse has Parker’s signature metal horseshoes on all four feet which read CW PARKER LEAVENWORTH KAN. Charles Wallace Parker was born in Griggsville, Illinois in 1864. By 1905 Parker had four full sized carnivals on tour throughout the country. The Parker "Carry-Us-Alls" (his play on words for carousel) continued to be the most important part of the amusement business. He built hundreds of small traveling carousels that were used by carnivals This wonderfully detailed carousel figure is in very old park paint and most appealing. SIZE: Approximately 3” h x 6’6” l. CONDITION: Various splits and cracks in the body and some minor losses. In general it is in very good condition. 9-71523 (20000-25000)

19th C. Mexican Wood Santo - Santiago Matamoros: Latin America, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A wonderful carved-wooden statue of Santiago Matamoros, also known as Saint James The Greater or Santiago the Moor Slayer, riding a horse over two figures on a rectangular plinth hand-painted in hues of forest and olive green, sky blue, crimson, yellow, brown, peach, tan, grey, black, and white. Dressed in a cloak and a pointed hat or helmet, the bearded rider sits upright, presenting a naturalistic visage with petite red lips, a pointed nose, and glass eyes beneath an arched brow. He grasps a sword in his left hand as his horse raises both front legs as though about to leap over the two figures below. The white horse is adorned with a blonde mane and tail, a black saddle, and an applied leather collar. Below the noble steed, one figure dressed in a blue robe raises his hand, attempting to protect himself from being trampled, while the second figure lays on his back, dressed in a red tunic and green shorts. Size: 8. 875" L x 4. 5" W x 13. 75" H (22. 5 cm x 11. 4 cm x 34. 9 cm). . This figure is based on a prototype found in European paintings of Santiago Matamoros - triumphant upon a white horse, dressed in lavish vestments, wielding an intimidating sword and trampling over many severed heads of Moors. Similar iconography also constitutes the central section of a 7 panel altarpiece in the Chapel of the Alcazar of Segovia. Santiago Matamoros was one of Christ's disciples who is believed to have founded the Christian church in Spain. In addition, a myth of the Middle Ages describes how years after his death, Santiago Matamoros miraculously resurfaced in the battle of Clavijo in 844. During this battle, he assisted the Christian King Ramiro I of Asturias in his victory over the Moors who ruled Spain between 711 and 1492. . . Santos played an important role in bringing the Catholic Church to the New World with the Spanish colonists. These religious figures were hand-carved and often furnished with crowns, jewels, and other accessories, usually funded by religious devotees, and were used as icons to explain the major figures - Mary, Christ, and the saints - to new, indigenous converts. Likewise, they served as a connection to the Old World for Spanish colonists far from home. They became a folk art tradition in the Spanish New World, from modern day Guatemala to as far north as New Mexico and Colorado. Many of them were lovingly cared for over the years, with repairs and paint added as they aged, and played an active part for a long time in the religious life of their communities. . . Provenance: private Glorieta, New Mexico, USA collection. . All items legal to buy/sell under U. S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. . . A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. .
