Fine Napoleon III Ormolu-Mounted Ebonized Cabinet, third quarter 19th century, of Louis XVI inspiration, the case with a pair of incised stamps "Grohe Freres Ebenistes Du Roi A Paris", the period noir de Mazy marble top over a case with a drawer over a glazed door, the returns with glass panels, adorned throughout with extraordinarily detailed ormolu mounts, the top edged with egg-and-dart ormolu, the door with a cast cartouche flanked by putti and arabesques, the pilasters with foliate-modeled scroll capitals over a trophy with a bird perched atop a quiver, the base blocks with deeply cast pierced foliate mounts over bun feet, the interior retaining its antique shelf lining, h. 42-3/4", w. 35", d. 15-1/2". Brothers Jean-Michel (b. 1804) and Guillaume Grohe (1808-1885), farmer's sons from the German Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt, had settled in Paris by 1827, dealing in general works of art. Jean-Michel married Swiss-born Christine-Charlotte Werner, the younger sister of renowned Restauration cabinetmaker Jean-Jacques Werner (1791-1849), and it is undoubtedly with Werner's guidance and tutelage that the Grohe brothers made their first forays into the sale and manufacture of fine furniture in 1829. Their success was immediate; an Egyptian Revival suite shown at the Industrial Exposition of 1834 was purchased by Princess Marie d'Orleans, and an octagonal ebony dresser shown at the 1844 Exposition won a gold medal. The workshop was formally incorporated as Grohe Freres in 1847, and the brothers were awarded the legion d'honneur at the 1849 Exposition. Their success and expansion continued unabated, with commissions for their revivalist furniture coming from King Louis-Philippe, Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie (who was particularly fond of their Louis XVI pieces). Jean-Michel retired to his home in the Parisian suburb of Montrouge in 1861; Guillaume continued the business alone. Queen Victoria became a client after Grohe's medal-winning entry at the London Exposition of 1862, and his furniture and bronzes at the 1867 Exposition were judged superior to those of the great Riesener. By 1878, he was the vice-president of the entire Exposition and member of the jury, admission and installation committees. He retired with his wife Emilie-Anne Prely to his home in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1884. With no successor (his only son died in infancy in 1849), the contents of his workshop were sold in February 1884; he died little more than a year later, on April 6, 1885. He and his brother remain among the finest French cabinetmakers of the century, having supplied every King, Emperor and President of France from the July Monarchy to the Third Republic. Examples of their work are conserved at the Chateau de Fontainebleau, the Musee de Canavelet, the Musee Conde a Chantilly, the Palais de Elysee, the Musee National de Chateau de Con and, of course, the Musee du Louvre.

Morganite
Urucum Mine, Minas Gerais, Brazil
In 1911, when this pink variety of beryl entered the marketplace, Madagascar was the location of its source. George Kunz, Vice President of Tiffany’s at the time, named the new-found gem in honor of the financier J.P. Morgan, who was a distinguished client of the jewelry store and who made many donations to the American Museum of Natural History.
The present museum-quality example of morganite is from a famous find of the late 1960s that has not since been equaled—the Urucum Mine. Morganite from this locality is known for its rich pink color, overall gemmy clarity and large size—and it has set the standard by which all gem morganite crystals found elsewhere are judged. Specimens from this find are featured in nearly all major institutional or private collections, and amongst the population of those specimens this one would remain in the forefront of attention due to its exceptional size, clarity and perfection of crystal form. Notable for its sharp and robust hexagonal crystal structure characteristic of the beryl species, this monstrous example weighs 18,562 carats. It is, to our knowledge, the largest such fine crystal to be on the market since the original find. Exhibiting excellent display qualities from either side, vertically or horizontally, the crystal is intact, save only for natural contact at the bottom where it attached to its host rock matrix. This is, without a doubt, an important gem crystal for any major collection which has, until now, remained in private collections since its discovery.

ROBERT CAPA (American, 1913-1954). EUROPE COLLECTION; 82 WORKS, located Europe; some with labels, stamps and inscriptions on reverse. Including "Seeds of War" up to 1945, text panels from exhibition and text panels from "The Concerned Photographer". Photographs mounted on aluminum - Unframed, largest: 60 in. x 39 in.
This collection of framed and panel mounted prints by Robert Capa, Werner Bischoff, David Seymour ("Chim"), Dan Weiner, and Leonard Freed represents of substantial segments of several influential exhibitions on photo-journalism organized in the 1960s by Magnum Photos, the prestigious photojournalists's cooperative, and by the Fund for Concerned Photography in collaborations with the Riverside Museum. Sets of these shows-- Photographs by Robert Capa (1960), Robert Capa War Photographs (1960), The World of Werner Bischof (1961), Chim's Times (1966), and The Concerned Photographer (1967)--were toured by the Smithsonian Institution in the 1960s and early 1970s. This collection consists of the original exhibition panels, as well as both panel-mounted and framed individual prints, used in these touring shows. It was discovered in Puerto Rico in the original Smithsonian shipping crates, after the crates were purchased at a United States Postal Service auction of unclaimed property. Internal evidence suggests that the one-man show exhibition sets may have been cannibalized to assemble or refurbish one or more of the touring sets of The Concerned Photographer (1968), one of the most widely circulated and acclaimed photography exhibitions of the late 1960s.
This material represents five of the six photographers featured in the Concerned Photographer--Werner Bischof, Robert Capa, David Seymour ("Chim"), Leonard Freed, and Dan Weiner; only André Kertesz is missing. It includes some of their most iconic images: Capa's Death of a Loyalist Soldier and D-Day, June 6, 1944; Bischof's Indian Dance; and Seymour's Disturbed Child, Poland, 1949, among many others. Almost all the prints (and notably the majority of the Capas) appear to have been made from the original negatives, many of which were retired a number of years ago. Most of the prints on board and masonite are in relatively good condition, with some minor surface damage or staining. Many of the prints mounted on aluminum panels are virtually pristine but others show damage resulting from corrosion of the aluminum support, which has caused blistering of the emulsion and the extrusion of aluminum oxide crystals onto the surface of the prints mounted on them. Interestingly, a number of the duplicate pairs consist of damaged and undamaged-but otherwise identical-aluminum panels.
The collection consists of aluminum, board, and masonite exhibit panels upon which one or more photographic prints are mounted, as well as individual framed photographic prints, and title, text and acknowledgement panels.
Some images include many scenes from Italy, France, England, North Africa and Germany during WWII; 'Mussolini has met his finish' (written on wall, woman walking by); Soldiers; Mothers In Naples looking for sons; wounded German POWs (Italy); Woman Collaborator, 1944 (woman with shaved head carrying baby being escorted out of Town); Street fighting and captured Germans; De Gaul in Paris, 1944 (France); 'Kraut Killer (pilot) Air Raid Warden, bombed church (England); Images in Berlin including POWs marching and Russian and US Soldiers; Paratrooper (Germany); British soldiers (showering); soldiers in fox holes; German pilot's grave (North Africa).
These lots represent segments from several influential exhibition on photojournalism organized in the 1960s by Magnum Photos and by the Fund for Concerned Photography and The Riverside Museum - Photographs by Robert Capa, Robert Capa War Photographs, The World of Werner Bischof, Chim's Times and The Concerned Photographer.
These photographs - all gelatin silver prints which appear to have been made from the original negatives - are mounted on aluminum panels. The condition of the material varies. Many of the prints mounted on the aluminum panels are virtually pristine (some staining on the panels where the prints are not mounted; other, however, suffer from a condition of inherent vice caused by corrosion of the aluminum support that has resulted in blistering and scattered delaminating of the emulsions, as well as some extrusion of aluminum oxide crystals onto the surface of the prints. This deterioration, which may have been exacerbated by the environmental conditions in the storage facilities in Puerto Rico, does appear to have been stabilized.
Without having consulted a conservator, it is our opinion that the prints can not easily be removed from the mounts. Removal would depend on the adhesive. Since there is no sign of lifting in any of these prints - having been stored in non-climate controlled storage - it is doubtful that the adhesive is water solvable and for that reason may have protected the prints themselves. A possible solution would be to cut down the mounts.
The prints are mounted on panels, many times with title, singularly or in groups of two up to five. Some panels contain text - most contain titles.

ROBERT CAPA (American, 1913-1954). SPANISH CIVIL WAR COLLECTION; 17 WORKS, located Spain, some with labels, stamps and inscriptions. Photographs mounted on aluminum - Unframed, largest: 36 in. x 48 in.
Some images include Bombings in Madrid, Air raid Barcelona, Defeated Loyalists marching into France, Death of a Soldier (iconic image) .

DONNIE R. CARTER. (AFRICAN AMERICAN?, 20th CENTURY: ) Mixed Media Collage. Untitled. Signed lower center. From a Larchmont, NY collection. An important political piece. In 1963, Catholic priest James E. Groppi, who grew up in Milwaukee’s Bay View neighborhood, was transferred to St. Boniface Parish, a predominantly working-class black parish located on Milwaukee’s North Side. While working at St. Boniface, Groppi became deeply involved in the Civil Rights Movement that was sweeping the nation. In 1965, after returning from the March on Selma, Alabama, he became a member of Lloyd Barbee‘s organization, the Milwaukee United School Integration Committee (MUSIC), eventually rising to the position of second vice-chairman. In 1965, Groppi became the adviser to the Milwaukee NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) Youth Council. The Youth Council’s first campaign with Groppi as its adviser targeted the local Order of Eagles Club in 1966. The following year, Groppi and the Youth Council joined forces with Alderwoman Vel Phillips to rally for a strong open housing law in Milwaukee. His final campaign with the Youth Council was the 1968 fight against employment discrimination at the Allen-Bradley Company. It was while working at a predominantly black youth center on Milwaukee’s North Side that Father Groppi was able to witness firsthand the poverty and racism that plagued Milwaukee’s black community. Soon after, he began traveling to the South to participate in voter registration drives and civil rights marches. Upon returning to Milwaukee, he joined local civil rights organizations. Between the years of 1965 and 1968, Father Groppi and the Milwaukee NAACP Youth Council initiated several major civil rights campaigns in the city of Milwaukee, garnering much publicity and controversy. After resigning from the Youth Council in the fall of 1968, Father Groppi continued his activism. In 1969, he organized the Welfare Mother’s March to Madison, Wisconsin to protest cuts in the state’s welfare budget. In 1972, he was arrested while participating in a blue collar workers protest and an anti-Vietnam War protest. He later enrolled in the Antioch School of Law in Washington, D. C, but withdrew from the school after two years. Towards the end of Groppi’s life he lived quite modestly. He eventually left the priesthood, married former Youth Council member Margaret Rozga in 1976, and together they had three children. He died in 1985 at the age of fifty-four. A few years later, in 1988, Milwaukee Mayor John Norquist and the Milwaukee Common Council renamed the city’s 16th Street bridge as the James E. Groppi Unity Bridge. EM - Dimensions: 26. 75" high x 39. 75" wide Condition Good. Framed behind glass, not examined out of frame.
