Note: Born in St. Aubin de Cauf, Normandy, Stanislaus Fournier was apprenticed at the Lepaute firm of Paris who sent him to install a large clock in New Orleans' St. Louis Hotel in 1841 or 1842. Prompted by the lack of clock and watchmakers in the city, Fournier opened a shop on Toulouse Street after his seven month hotel project was complete. Fournier soon relocated to 60 Royal Street, where he worked for twenty years, and his apprentice, E. Barbier, remained for another thirty. Reference: J.M. Mahogany cased striking mantel regulator with sweep center seconds hand and concentric date of the month calendar on a convex porcelain-enamel dial signed Lepaute Hr. du Roi & de la Ville a' Paris. The movement with grid-iron compensating pendulum and Lepaute's rare 10 second remontoire is signed Michel Lepaute a Paris, invenit et FECIT 1281 no. 12/2, circa 1821. 2 week duration.Watch Video

The movement has Lepaute's pin wheel escapement, a gridiron pendulum, and employs Huygens continuous rope. The circular chapter ring, which has an aperture below 12 o'clock for the year calendar, has inner Arabic numerals showing mean-time and outer Roman numerals for the hours. Within this is a disc inscribed Tems Vrai (solar time) which rotates showing solar minutes against the gilt minute hand and the equation of time may be read off by noting the difference between the two sets of Arabic numerals. Case attributed to Nicolas Petit (1732-1791), fronted by a solid door with an ormolu-framed glazed cartouche, revealing the pendulum balancier, of elegant transitional style, scrolled acanthus and mask mounts.
