(3) These three bear sculptures were produced as part of the 'Porcelain Zoo' series. Their designs were produced by the collaboration of two artists,the porcelain painter Viktor Zhbanov and sculptor/modeler Pavel Veselov. After Nicholai Ivanovich Liberich (Russian, 1828-1883) "Siberian Grizzly". A modern cast bronze after the original with toned variations in the brown patinated finish, approx. 21"H overall. "This bear was killed by the Russian Emperor (Alexander III) at the place named Apsetsa, March 9, 1865" in cyrillic in the bronze base. Liberich studied at the Academy of St. Petersburg. He specialized exclusively in animal sculpture and was very prolific in his production. Several museums in Russia maintain works in their permanent collection, and was known to have done other commissions for Alexander III.
