French 18th century book plates depicting decisive battles; King Philippe-Auguste established France's military pre-eminence with the 1214 victory at Bouvines. The first hand colored scene recreates Mathieu II (Mathieu the Large) of Montmorency presenting his city to the King along with the standards of the defeated English King John. The second hand colored plate shows the French hero Francois of Lorraine breaking Charles V's siege of Metz in 1553. The plates are dated 1788 and 1792 respectively. 10" x 6 7/8". Good condition.
