Lynching Scene of Four African Americans Russellville KY 1908 Silver gelatin photograph depicting the lynching of four African American men in Russellville KY 5.25 x 7.25 in. The photograph is accompanied by the publication: Coffman Edward. The Story of Russellville: A Short History of the Town of Russellville Logan County Ky. The News-Democrat Print 1931. Small 8vo paper covers 71pp.In 1908 African American Rufus Browder shot and killed a prominent white farmer for whom he worked by the name of James Cunningham out of self defense. Browder was arrested and moved to Louisville KY for his own protection. Subsequently a group of Browder\'s friends were arrested and placed in jail for \"disturbing the peace \" and on the night of Aug. 1 1908 a white mob entered the jail and demanded the prisoners. With the jailer\'s cooperation the prisoners were handed over to the mob and hanged simultaneously from the same tree. A note pinned to one of the men read \"Let this be a warning to you niggers to let white people alone or you will go the same way.\" The four victims were Joseph Riley Virgil Robert and Thomas Jones. This photograph was also produced as a real photo postcard and was purportedly printed and distributed by Nashville TN salesman Jack Morton. Condition: Small pinhole along middle left edge of photograph. Some water damage to book. Some separation of covers along spine of book.

Circa 1859. Note: An excerpt from the March 29, 1856 Louisville Courier states, "And speaking of compasses reminds us of a visit we made yesterday to the mathematical establishment of Messrs. Tiensch & Standcliffe, on Third Street, nearly opposite the post office. There we saw a complete Instrumental outfit for a party of engineers who about starting out to survey the Branch Railroad to Memphis.....More elegant work could not be found in any city, nor any made with greater precision and more attention to the necessary scientific details." Additional note - Adolph Tiensch was born in 1820 in Germany and immigrated to America, setting up shop in Ohio first. The letter is dated 20 Mar. 1895 and notes that several copies of the War Map are enclosed ...for distribution to such members of your Post as may desire to look over a map of the country in which they doubtless did not have as pleasant a time as we expect to give them on their visit next September. The 1895 National Encampment was held in Louisville KY. The maps are 9.25 x 11.75 in. with red marking battlefields and other significant points and green following the L & N Line. Condition: Maps and letter in excellent condition. Cover scuffed and soiled as expected.

- Dr. William T. Simrall CSA Corporal
Dr. William T. Simrall CSA Corporal Kentucky 8th Cavalry Personal Medical Equipment A fine lot of medical equipment identified to Dr. William T. Simrall (1842-1934) who served with the 8th Kentucky Cavalry during the Civil War including: Simrall's diploma from Louisville Medical College; a presentation surgeon's kit; doctor's bag; and microscope.?William T. Simrall born in Lexington Kentucky enlisted in September 1862 as a Private mustering into Co. B of the 8th Kentucky Cavalry eventually being promoted to Corporal. After mustering into Confederate service in the late summer of 1862 the 8th Kentucky Cavalry Regiment fought in Kentucky and then rode with John Hunt Morgan. Most of the men were captured at Buffington Island on July 19 and the remnant at New Lisbon on July 26 1863. The 8th was not reorganized. It was commanded by Colonel R.S. Cluke Lieutenant Colonel Cicero Coleman and Major Robert S. Bullock. The date and method of Simrall's discharge are unknown.?Following the war Simrall attended Louisville Medical College as indicated by his diploma included with the lot partially printed on vellum dated 28 February 1873 17.5 x 23 in. The highlight of the group is a surgical kit manufactured by J.H. Gemrig of Philadelphia PA housed in original walnut case and accompanied by original leather pouch 14.75 x 5.25 x 2.5 in. With engraved plaque attached to top of case inscribed: Presented to / Wm. T. Simrall. M.D. / By Dr. C.W. Kelly / Feb. 23 1873 / As a Prize in Anatomy.?The lot also includes Simrall's leather doctor's bag containing the following items: 1932 Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Co. pass for Dr. W.T. Simrall Surgeon in leather wallet; four surgical pocket cases the first marked by manufacturer Wm. V. Willis & Co. Philadelphia the second marked Theo. Tafel Louisville / Nashville the other two unmarked; five pocket cases containing large and small glass vials and/or syringes the first marked by manufacturer Abbott Alkaloidal Co. Chicago IL the others unmarked; and a silver syringe case engraved Admiral on one side marked German Silver / Becton Dickinson & Co. / Rutherford N.J. on reverse housed in original box with Theo. Tafel Surgical Instruments Louisville KY sticker attached.?Also included is a Bausch & Lomb compound microscope patented October 3 1876 10 in. ht. housed in mahogany case with two eyepieces and two objectives in canisters; plus a box containing 25+ glass medical slides with penciled notes attached and a portable prescription scale housed in original box manufactured by Dr. C.H. Fitch. Although unmarked the microscope and slides almost certainly belonged to Dr. Simrall.? Condition: Expected wear to the kits.?
