GUB MARINE CHRONOMETER WITH POWER RESERVEGUB MARINE CHRONOMETER WITH POWER RESERVE 9 ¼" x 11 ¾" x 9 ?" tall Glaschutte, a German city in the old state of Saxony, became the cradle of German watch making. WWII converted all effort to the manufacture of military time pieces. Post WWII, most original Glaschutte watch companies, had lost much of their talent, as well as suffering Soviet machinery confiscations. In 1951 an east German state owned conglomerate was formed, pulling together all the talent of the companies in Glaschutte, including today's recognizable A. Lange & Sohne, and formed VEB Glashutter Uhrenbetriebe (GUB); to manufacture primarily marine chronometers. A. Lange & Sohne was gone in 1948 as a private company, and would have to wait until reunification to reappear as a new entity. GUB would develop mechanical wristwatch movements, even through the quartz crisis era, which would become the foundation of today's proprietary premium watch movements of Glashutte original. GUB became Glashutte original in 1994, after privatization of the state owned company. GUB made very good quality timepieces, far superior to many contemporaries of the time; but should not be confused with the haute horology, 1990 relaunch of the defunct A. Lange & Shone brand. VEB-GUB, loosely translates to publicly owned Glaschutte clock (timepiece)

TWO STERLING SILVER SERVING DISHES,TWO STERLING SILVER SERVING DISHES, a 1928 Reed & Barton Sauceboat, lg. 7 3/4 , and a Dominick & Haff Bowl with square pleated rim, monogrammed, lg. 8 5/8 in., approx 12.85 troy oz. Provenance: Hailing from Wales and England, the Jones family were early settlers to Massachusetts circa 1660. Settling in the Berkshires, the family worked closely with Zenas Crane of Crane Paper, established in 1801. The paper firm still exists today and holds the recipe for the currency of the United States. At that time, all paperwork was done by hand; rags were pounded into pulp in mortar and twenty mortars were required to reduce 100 pounds of rags to pulp each day. In 1845, Edward Dorr Griffin Jones branched out and founded E.D. Jones Company in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Working closely with local machine shops, he developed and patented specialized machinery, notably the "No Wave" pulp machine for the manufacture of papermaking. A pioneer in the industry, E.D. Jones & Sons Company was sold for $5,000,000 to Beloit Iron Works in 1958. The silver being offered here has been handed down from generation to generation of the Jones family.

Auction buying is wholesale and not the same as retail store or retail internet buying. There are no returns based on condition. Our auction items are mostly vintage, mostly from estates, and are not in perfect condition. The items are sold "as is", and we are acting as agents, not as principals. Accordingly, prospective buyers are entirely responsible for determining the physical condition of lots prior to and as a condition to bidding. To assist prospective bidders in this endeavor, we offer in person open-house preview days prior to the auction, and also provide written condition reports in response to emailed requests submitted to condition@woodburyauction.com at least two days prior to the auction. The printed catalog lot information is a best efforts presentation of our opinion, rendered on a time-sensitive schedule, and is provided for guidance only, without legal obligation, and does not constitute a "statement of fact". The absence of condition statements in a lot catalog entry does not mean that the item is in perfect condition or is without defects. JOHN SWATSLEY (B 1937) STEAMBOAT WASHINGTONJOHN SWATSLEY (B 1937) STEAMBOAT WASHINGTON (1816)John Swatsley (American, B. 1937) "Steamboat Washington (1816)" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This artwork originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 25c Steamboat Washington stamp issued March 3, 1989.
When steamboats arrived on the Mississippi, it soon became evident that they would have to evolve to meet the requirements of the river in order to be of any use. What was needed was a steamboat that would draw less water and move on the water instead of through it. The craft would need a wide, shallow hull, with heavy boilers and machinery on top of the hull rather than inside it. Captain Henry Shreve took an important step toward building such a steamboat in 1816 with the Washington. Shreve built a deck over the hull and placed the heavy boilers on this deck, and replaced the bulky, low-pressure engine with a new, high-pressure engine. Shreve also got rid of the heavy condenser that allowed the same water to be used over and over again, seeing no need to conserve water while floating on a whole river of it. Passenger accommodations were put on yet a second deck, above the boilers. The Washington could make the trip from New Orleans to Louisville in twenty-five days, an amazing feat in her time. For all her success, the Washington also had tragedy. An explosion on board during her maiden voyage blew Captain Shreve and most of his crew overboard, killing thirteen people. The captain survived to rebuild his steamboat, and the success of the Washington spurred design development. Soon other steamboats were built using the innovations she had pioneered. If any craft could be called "the mother of western steamboats," it would be Captain Shreve's Washington.
