Carey 1814) 13 1/2''h. 19 3/4''w. in a walnut frame 14 1/2''h. 21''w.; and ''Virginia'' from Joseph Scott The New and Universal Gazetteer; or Modern Geographical Dictionary (Philadelphia: Francis and Robert Bailey 1800) 6 1/2''h. 7 1/4''w. matted and framed 12 3/4''h. 9 3/4''w. West Virginia was admitted to the Union as a new state on June 20 1863 after the Wheeling Convention a series of meetings in 1861 held in what is now Wheeling West Virginia. At the convention which was attended by representatives of twenty-seven northwestern Virginia counties it was decided to repeal the Ordinance of Secession passed by Virginia in 1861 to form the Restored Government of Virginia and to appoint new government officials effectively seceding from the seceded state of Virginia in order to rejoin the Union as West Virginia. Both with toning and some minor foxing handcoloring still bright.

JOHN SPEED 1676 MAP OF VIRGINIA, MARYLAND, AND CHESAPEA...A MAP OF VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND by John Speed, 1676, engraved by Francis Lamb. London: Thomas Basset and Richard Chiswell. Hand colored. In addition to showing parts of Virginia and Maryland, the map also shows portions of Carolina to the left margin and "New Jarsy" (sic) to the right. The direction of the north is to the right, and Native American Indian words for the Chesapeake Bay are used to identify various bodies of water and other landmarks. British armorial cartouche for the reigns of James I through James II (1603-1688) appear in the upper left corner, and below the coat of arms is a cartouche containing the scale of the map in English miles. The reverse side includes printed text descriptions of both Virginia and Maryland. Framed under glass. Sight: 15 3/4" H x 20 3/8" W. Framed: 17 1/2" H x 22" W. Note: this double page map was originally bound as part of John Speed's "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine."
Condition:
Some scattered areas of damp staining and overall light toning. Faint fold line to the vertical mid-section and very slight rippling to paper lower right quadrant. Not examined out of the frame.

""A Map of the Most Inhabited Part of Virginia containing the whole Province of Maryland with Part of Pennsilvania, New Jersey and North Carolina, Drawn by Joshua Fry and Peter Jefferson in 1775", 31" x 48", some restoration, Condition Report: The map is trimmed to the image, sheet size is currently 30 3/4" by 49". It has been laid down on a 1/4" thick cardboard panel. A vertical repair 20 3/4" from the left end appears to have been done the entire height of the sheet when it was laid down. In the upper left quadrant a vertical repair 7" from the left end extends about half way down the map. Estimate $8,000-12,000

Rare Topographic Civil War Map Birds Eye View of Virginia Maryland Delaware and the District of Columbia 22 x 29.75 in. map mounted on linen and attached to wooden hanging bar. The title The Seat of War is printed in the upper margin and Birds Eye View of Virginia Delaware and the District of Columbia printed in lower margin. Undated but produced in 1861. Drawn and lithographed by J. Schedler and printed by Sarony Major & Knapp of New York. A rare and well-detailed map of the key theater of the early phase of the Civil War. The map includes street grids for Baltimore Washington Norfolk Richmond and Lynchburg. The map skillfully renders topography in particular the Blue Ridge Shenandoah and Allegheny Mountain ranges. It also offers fine detail throughout showing towns cities and river ways. In addition numerous steam-powered ships are shown traversing the waters of the Chesapeake Bay the Delaware Bay the Atlantic Ocean and the region's several navigable rivers. Condition: Condition of map is a bit rough overall; toning and soiling to map; wear along edges.
