Marble Target Game.
Rectangular dovetailed open box with heavily sprung wooden paddles at either end and a wooden cup at the center. The paddles, which are nicely (but not finely) hand- crated, have indentations for the marble to be launched, are hinged through long metal pints to triangular wooden supports, and are sprung with spring steel. The paddle levers protrude through one inch diameter holes which are reinforced with a light colored metal, possibly aluminum. The paddle supports and cup are stapled to the playing surface. There are no identifying markings. Note: Obviously a two player game, where the objective is to successfully launch a marble into the target cup. There is an element of menace, as incautious use of the lever would launch a marble directly to ones opponent. Probably circa 1900.

The Jolly Marble Game.
Very rare Tivoli game, the best I have ever seen. "The Jolly Marble Game". You put a marble on the knob at the top and it zigzags down the five swinging figures with cups. Then down a ramp that you aim, to score holes. In absolutely remarkable shape. Each of the five cup figures and the knob figure are names. I have researched the names and cannot find any reference to them. They were probably known to English children in the 19th century. In remarkable shape, the best ive ever seen. Wood. Mid to late 1800s. Note: Labeled R.S Reed Toy Co., Leominster, Mass. Trade name used 1875 - 1897. Patent pending. Paten date is 1892, so this example is probably circa 1890. Pradere, Alexandre. FRENCH FURNITURE MAKERS: THE ART OF THE EBENISTE FROM LOUIS XIV TO THE REVOLUTION. Malibu, CA: The J. Paul Getty Museum, 1989.
Other Notes: Pierre Roussel (1723-1782) was the most brilliant representative of a quite modest family of joiners: his father and his four younger brothers were journeymen in cabinetmaking. He acquired mastership very early (in 1745) and, after an initial period most likely full of difficulties, he reached a truly brilliant station. He exercised his trade in the rue de Charenton, opposite the rue Saint-Nicolas, at the sign of The Picture of Saint-Pierre, his patron saint. He worked in particular for the Prince of Conde, whom he supplied, for the Palais-Bourbon and Chantilly, with furniture of an approximate total value of $2,000.
Upon his death in 1782, his widow continued his business with the assistance of her sons, Pierre-Michel and Pierre II, called "the younger," both being masters. According to the custom of the masters' widows, she kept her husband's stamp, which was then used by Pierre-Michel and Pierre II.
Specimens bearing P. Roussel's mark are quite varied; Pierre Roussel, the father, created at first purely Louis XV furniture, then gradually turned to the Louis XVI style, utilized after him by his sons.
