- CONFEDERATE AUTOGRAPH ALBUM PLUS ROSENTHAL
CONFEDERATE AUTOGRAPH ALBUM PLUS ROSENTHAL WESTERN LITH...Autographs of approx. 47 Confederate soldiers, including some from Mosby's Raiders, collected by Miss Marietta Miller of Virginia in a Leather bound album. The album has tooled gilt leather covers and is titled NATURE AND HER HARMONIES; published with blank pages for autographs, interspersed with 5 chromo-lithographed pages of prints, collectible in their own right, by Max Rosenthal: Great Cinereous Shrike/Painted Finch, Southern Mockingbird, Antelope Chase, Encampment of Indians, and Toilet of the Indian Girls. Inside cover is inscribed for original owner, Miss Marietta B. Miller's Book June 20th 1857. Album - 9" H x 7" W. Miss Miller is believed to have lived around Port Royal, Virginia. The album contains numerous autographs, poems and letters written by friends dated prior to the Civil War. Beginning around 1861, signatures of soldiers begin to appear. They include: Wm. Garland Smith Lt. Co. Mosby's Batt., G.F. Bowie, Julius Mason, Julian Mitchell Charleston SC, Harry M. R___, 9th Va. Cavalry, Lt. James L. Bowie, Wm. D. Macgill 1st MD Cavalry, Col. W.L. Peck, Comdg 9th Louisiana, Sgt. E.R. Tooke 9th Louisiana, P.E. Jones 9th Louisiana Rgt., W. P. Thompson Capt. 7th Louisiana, Sgt Coward 13th Virginia, Maj. Mahonies 3rd Regt. Alabama Infantry, Thomas Booker Mosby's Battalion, John Garrett Fredsburg Battery, S. Buttermore 31st Virginia, Sgt B.B. Ashby 13th Virginia, Major Hamilton Texas, and many more. Near the end of the album is a letter written by "An Alabamian" expressing "sincere feelings of thankfulness 'my soldiers' feel to the kind ladies of Va" for the "many acts of friendship extended to us who are far from loved ones at home." Note: This album descended in the family of CSA Capt. Walter Bowie of Port Royal Virginia, who later moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and whose children donated land to the city of Fairview, TN establishing Bowie Nature Park. This Walter Bowie is NOT believed to be the spy Walter Bowie associated with Mosby's Raiders, although he was likely a distant relation. Capt. Walter Bowie married two women, both with the last name of Miller. Marietta Miller may have been his first wife (to whom he was married only briefly, and whose name was not found in our genealogy research), or a relation to his second wife, Eugenia Miller. Binding of album is taped and has separated from pages, edge and corner wear to covers. Soldier signatures are in pencil and some are faded. Some pages have light stains and foxing.

- STEVE FERGUSON (B. 1946) LOCKHEED C-130A
STEVE FERGUSON (B. 1946) LOCKHEED C-130A HERCULESSteve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "Lockheed C-130A Hercules" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Cold Press Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting is the original painting which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 32c C-130 Hercules stamp. During the opening months of the Korean war, it became obvious to Air Force planners that the Fairchild C-119 lacked the power and performance necessary to meet massive cargo and troop transport needs. Lockheed won the right to produce prototypes for a transport capable of carrying up to 30,000 lbs of cargo, operating on short or make-shift runways and capable of making paradrops and assault landings. Mass production of the Hercules commenced in Marietta, Georgia. In service by the end of 1956, the turboprop aircraft was utilized heavily in Vietnam as a transport, airborne command post and gunship. The hefty Hercules continues to support a variety of missions and served with distinction as both a transport and gunship in the Persian Gulf War.

- MAYA GREENSTONE HEAD OF TLALOC DEITY
MAYA GREENSTONE HEAD OF TLALOC DEITY W/ SUSPENSION LOOP...**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, late Maya or Vera Cruz / Aztec, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A fantastical hand-carved greenstone deity head with coiling, volute shaped lips and ears, most likely depicting Tlaloc, the Rain God. Tlaloc (Chaac to the Maya) is the Mesoamerican rain deity, who with his axe made of lightning, strikes the clouds, and produces thunder and rain; his worship was widespread and well established by the time of the Aztecs, and became one of their chief deities. In Aztec iconography, he is depicted with concentric circles around his eyes and large fangs – as seen here. He is also frequently represented in artwork throughout the region and seems to have been one of the oldest and most widespread of the Mesoamerican gods. Tlaloc is associated with fertility - the green stone here symbolizing the lush vegetation from rainfall he made possible. Size: 3" L x 2" W x 3.5" H (7.6 cm x 5.1 cm x 8.9 cm)
The suspension ring is interesting, and perhaps this swerved as a large pendant or a ritualistic hacha (a carving associated with the ritual Mesoamerican ballgame).

- COLIMA REDWARE DOG EFFIGY VESSEL**Originally
COLIMA REDWARE DOG EFFIGY VESSEL**Originally Listed At $1500**
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A beautifully constructed, hand-built redware dog vessel of a charming form that exhibits a playful nature and smooth, highly burnished surfaces enveloped in hues of burnt sienna and black. The corpulent canine stands with a portly abdomen atop a quartet of bowed legs and features a raised neck, powerful shoulders, and a perky tail that doubles as the vessel's spout. The conical head protrudes out from the neck and bears incised, almond-shaped eyes, a tapered snout with carved-out nostrils, an incised mouth, and a large pair of perky ears flanking the rounded skull cap. Size: 16.9" L x 7.6" W x 9.6" H (42.9 cm x 19.3 cm x 24.4 cm)
Pottery canines like this one are the only remains that we have today of a sophisticated and unique culture in West Mexico - they made no above-ground monuments or sculptures, at least that we know of, which is in strong contrast to developments elsewhere in ancient Mesoamerica. Instead, their tombs were their lasting works of art: skeletons arrayed radially with their feet positioned inward, and clay offerings, like this example, placed alongside the walls facing inward, near the skulls. A large effigy like this one most likely would have flanked the entrance to a tomb in a way that archaeologists have interpreted as guarding. Some scholars have interpreted these dynamic sculptures of the living as a strong contrast to the skeletal remains whose space they shared, as if they mediated between the living and the dead.
Scholars know of at least two types of Colima dogs, one to be fattened up and ritually sacrificed or eaten and one to serve as a watchdog and healer of the ill. This plump hairless canine known as a Chichi or Escuintla is thought to be related to the Chihuahua or Mexican Hairless also known as the Xoloitzcuintle. The Xolo dog was named for the deity Xolotl, the God of the Underworld, and believed to guide the deceased as they journeyed to the afterlife. Colima vessels like this example were buried in shaft tombs to protect the deceased and provide sustenance for eternity.

#178005
Condition:
Professionally repaired and restored with some repainting and infill at break lines. Chipping to proper left ear, as well expected nicks and abrasions to surface, all commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with rich mineral deposits.
