- RARE BOUND VOLUME OF JOHN ABBOT WATERCOLORS(English/American,
RARE BOUND VOLUME OF JOHN ABBOT WATERCOLORS(English/American, 1751-circa 1840)
Birds of Georgia, Consisting of the most rare and beautiful kinds, Drawn and Coloured from Nature by John Abbot, 1823, 73 watercolors on wove paper, original full leather binding, 12-3/4 x 8-1/4 in.
Note: John Abbott was born in London, 1751. He was traveling the path to a career in the Law with his father, however he chose instead to spend a lifetime observing and recording the insects, butterflies and birds of Virginia and Georgia. He was fascinated by the natural world and drawn to the community of 18th century scientists who took their inspiration and acquired specimens from England's many colonies. In 1773 Abbot left his homeland of England, never to return, armed with a letter of introduction from the Royal Society of London, an agreement with the London jeweler John Francillon to serve as his agent for the sale of specimens and illustrations, and commissions from several collectors and scientists.
Abbot arrived in Virginia at the onset of the Revolutionary War - imperfect timing as he relied on British patronage and buyers for his watercolors and drawings. After 2 years in Virginia he moved to Georgia where he remained. The War of 1812 once again disrupted his sales in England and he turned to American clients but resumed trade with England after the war.
Abbot's work has been underrepresented in the discussion of early American naturalists as the vast majority of his work was sent to London. Appreciation of his work has grown as collectors farther afield have seen his lovely watercolors and shared his view of the natural world in the 18th century south. Abbot's watercolors and published works are held in public and private collections around the world.

1906 JACK LONDON "WHITE FANG," 1ST EDITIONNorth America, United States, New York, ca. 1906 CE. BAL 11896; Sisson & Martens, p. 29. Wow! A first edition of one of Jack London's most famous novels! A fine second issue of "White Fang" written by Jack London (American, 1876 to 1916) and published by The Macmillan Company in 1906. Comprised of 327 pages and 8 color plates by Charles Livingston Bull (American, 1874 to 1932), the famous novel features its original pale green cloth hardcover stamped in black and white lettering with an illustration of a wolf beneath a full moon on the front cover, as well as gilt lettering along the spine. The enthralling tale explores themes of morality and redemption, detailing the journeys of White Fang - a wild wolfdog - through the Yukon and Northwest territories as he transforms from an untamed member of an arctic wolfpack to the domesticated canine of a Californian aristocrat. It was intended as an autobiographical allegory based on London's metamorphosis from a teenage delinquent to a married, middle-class author. Size: 5.3" L x 1.4" W x 7.8" H (13.5 cm x 3.6 cm x 19.8 cm)
Born John Griffith Chaney, Jack London was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist who became one of the first American authors to gain international celebrity status. Considered an innovator of science fiction, London was a passionate advocate of unionization, workers' rights, and socialism. He is most famous for writing "The Call of the Wild" and "White Fang," both set in the Klondike Gold Rush which London joined at the age of 21 in 1897.

IMPORTANT SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH ATTRIBUTED TO JAMES ADOLPHUS BUTE, CREW MEMBER ON CHARLES DARWIN'S EXPEDITION CIRCA EARLY 1830S LENGTH 6.25". INCLUDES A GLASS AND WOOD CASE WITH MIRRORED BASE. CASE HEIGHT 5.5". WIDTH 8IMPORTANT SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH ATTRIBUTED TO JAMES ADOLPHUS BUTE, CREW MEMBER ON CHARLES DARWIN'S EXPEDITION, Circa Early 1830s, Believed to be engraved aboard the H.M.S. Beagle during Charles Darwin's second voyage, the 1831-1836 expedition. Obverse depicts "Natives of Tierra del Fuego.", a scene of two figures on a mountainous coastline, one holding a spear and the other paddling a canoe. Signed lower right "J.A. Bute". Reverse depicts a bust portrait of a "New Zealander" with barbed spears and a hatchet. Edge with "Britons United" in a banner below a floral motif. Wide feathery fan-like borders at tip and base. Dimensions: Length 6.25". Includes a glass and wood case with mirrored base. Case height 5.5". Width 8.75". Provenance: Notes:Accompanied by copies of correspondence between William J. Boylhart and Dr. Stuart M. Frank, Senior Curator Emeritus of the New Bedford Whaling Museum and founder of the Scrimshaw Forensics Laboratory, discussing the tooth's authenticity and attribution to Bute, in which Frank writes "I do believe that it's authentic ...".The signature, lettering and style of workmanship on this tooth are identical to a tooth by James Adolphus Bute that is part of the collection of the Western Australia Museum in Perth and two Bute examples sold at Eldred's, The Marine Sale, July 19, 2018, Lots #76 and #109.According to the Dictionary of Scrimshaw Artists, by Stuart M. Frank (Mystic, Ct.: Mystic Seaport Museum, 1991), p. 24, Englishman James Adolphus Bute was born around 1799 and joined the Royal Navy around 1819. There was great crossover of personnel between whaling and naval service in England, much more so than in the United States, and Bute may have been introduced to scrimshaw during a whaling voyage in between stints on naval vessels. "The Journal of Syms Covington", assistant to Darwin on his second voyage aboard the "Beagle", December 1831-September 1836, lists James Bute as a crew member, one of six crew members listed as a Royal Marine. Given the similarities between images on this and other Bute teeth and drawings by Conrad Martens, the official artist onboard the "Beagle", it is possible Bute was influenced by or collaborated with the artist in creating his pieces of scrimshaw.
