- US Pre- Civil War Pattern 1847
US Pre- Civil War Pattern 1847 Grimsley Dragoon Saddle Ca 1850s. Copper nameplate in horn section reads Earle A. Royce Willsboro New York. Saddle measures 19.75'' from pommel to cantle. Leather in the seat section of the saddle is a period replacement and is void of its original quilted pattern. This was common practice to replace the quilted padded leather since by its inherent nature the padded leather did not have a long lifespan. Brass furniture throughout. Thornton Grimsley was a saddle maker in St. Louis MO. These saddles had deep-seated trees and a very high cantle that were inspired by Spanish/Mexican saddles that were popular at the time. Grimsley saddles were used by General U.S. Grant General Thomas Sherman and General Robert E. Lee. [See Caba 1982: 35-45. See also Dorsey and McPheeters 1999: 19-21.] Condition: Very good. Lacking one brass rivet on front of pommel otherwise leather is supple and is complete.

Civil War Period U.S. Model 1860 cavalry saber with scabbard Captain John McCleery dated 1863 three-bar brass guard with twisted brass wire-wrapped leather grip curved single-edge blade ricasso marked: ''U.S.'' - ''DFM'' - ''1863'' on one side ''EMERSON & SILVER TRENTON N.J.'' on opposite side. Steel scabbard with two ring mounts and drag. blade L34 1/2'' overall L40 1/2'' Provenance: Charleston South Carolina private collection. Other Notes: John McCleery was born in Milton PA on April 8 1837. His parents were William McCleery and Margaret Pollock. Prior to the Civil War he attended and graduated from Princeton University. At the onset of the war he joined the 5th PA Reserves and was made Captain of ''H'' company. His immediate superior was Col.Senaca Simmons. This unit which was part of a reserve brigade headed by Gen.McCall participated in Gen.McClellan's peninsula campaign of 1862. Severely wounded in the leg during the battle of White Oak Swamp (Glendale) on June 30 1862 he was taken prisoner by the Confederates and later released in a prisoner swap. After the war he returned to Milton and married Mary Helen Marr started a law practice rose in rank to LTC in the reserves and was active in the G.A.R. Despite his war wound he lived until April 8 1907.
