Archive of Documents Associated with the Sturges Family Including John R. Sturges 3rd GA Infantry KIA The lot contains a variety of items including over 100 receipts and other ephemera an early indenture and the will of John R. Sturges. Among the receipts are several for supplies for the Confederacy as well as other sales of local products. The earliest item is an indenture for land dated 26 Jan. 1838 purchased by Nathaniel Sturges from Thomas Owen. Nathaniel Sturges Sr. was the brother of Samuel Sturges the father of William and John Sturges. The senior Nathaniel came to the Waynesboro area about the same time as his brother although the exact date is unclear. However he died in 1826 but his son Nathaniel Jr. was born about 1816. Records list him as a merchant possibly with his cousin William who was a witness to this indenture. Unfortunately Nathaniel died of pneumonia on 25 Dec. 1841. Mourning Ribbon 2.5 x 8.5 in. In Memory of Alexander H. Stephens Governor of Georgia Citizen Augusta GA. with albumen image of Stephens affixed to circle in center of ribbon. Alexander Stephens was Vice President of the Confederate States of America 1861 ??" 1865 and Governor of Georgia 1882-1883. He also represented Georgia??Ts 8th district before (1843-1859) and after (1873-1882) the war. Receipt 7 x 9.75 in. for $50 to be paid to Daniel Carter To Services as nurse and for burial of three Small Pox Cases Waynesboro July 15th 1866. The court was ordered to pay the above account to W. U. Sturges who is authorized to act for it (William Urquhart Sturges). Services rendered 15 July 1866; statement dated 31 Aug. 1866. Receipt from The Ladies??T Southern Aid Association printed on back of a cdv (2.5 x 4 in.) of Jefferson Davis for $1 to aid the Davis family. This part of Georgia was still agriculturally productive and Waynesboro is just a few miles from Savannah the most important port in Georgia even though the port town fell early in the war and Federal troops occupied Fort Pulaski. Apparently a large quantity of goods was still sold to the Confederate Army in spite of the presence of Union troops nearby as receipts in the Sturges documents indicate. One receipt is from Thos. A. Rogers Agent Quarter Master at Waynesboro GA for 29 lbs bacon and a bushel of corn for Lieut. V. Fulcher Burke Co. 9 May 1865. And a second receipt from Rogers for 450 pounds of bacon tax in kind signed as Q.M. Agent May 1864. Receipt 2.75 x 6.75 in. $1000.00 due W U Sturgis in Conf. money Oct. 21 1864 ??" Nathl. Scales(?). 5 x 8 in. Received Burk County Ga of R J Morrison (2) Two Beeves on foot Estimated to weigh five 500 pounds net for the use of the Confederate Government [sic] for which I have given certificate of Indebtedness for impressments Commishener. Price the same having bin delivered under paragraph IV of General Orders No. 26 from A. & I Generals office ??" This delivery entitles said Morrison to a credit of 25+ per cent on above amount provided his exemption has bin applied for. April 1st 1864 Ged. Alexander Com. Agt. Receipt from Thos. Pierce to W. Sturgis Esq. Waynesboro 2 Sept 1864 for 471 bushels of corn. I owe you a balance of 9 ?? bushels which I will ship any day I can get the sacks. Please send me a receipt for the 470 lbs of Bacon. The lot contains more than 100 receipts and notes. One group contains 20 pre-war and war date receipts plus 16 loan receipts. There are also 30 post-war receipts many addressed to William Sturges as Clerk of the Superior Court of Burke County. In addition there are 6 promissory notes dated 1859 to 1862 and 16 tax receipts from the same period plus one each from 1876 and 1881. Two of the receipts in this group are from Wm. Holmes. This was a period when the Sturges family was building. John was home from college and starting his career. Another group of nearly 3 dozen receipts cover everything from shipping agricultural products primarily corn and cotton to the purchase of household goods such as hairbrushes and Venetian blinds. There is certainly more information to be gleaned from these tidbits by the historians of the war. One item also included in this group of receipts is from prospective builder E.C. Conner (?) dated 13 Feb. 1879: If you let me build that house I can save you at least five hundred less than the bids you git??|. There are also the odd recipes stuck in the papers ??" one for white wash one for pickling beef pork etc. Also included are a couple of receipts for labor at least one of which is for a Cold. Man. Both date during the war 1862 and 1863. It was common to rent out slaves for large projects even before the war but as the conflict progressed it became more and more difficult to feed and clothe them so any cash they could generate went to help in their support. And for the hiree it was certainly less expensive to rent the slaves than to buy them. One somewhat curious group is 8 receipts and 3 letters from the Cotton States Life Ins. Co. for a policy on William Sturges. They date from 1877 to 1882 and the signer is difficult to read but appears to be ?Wimberly.? By 1880 and presumably earlier the elder Sturges was institutionalized so this may be a legal representative. Another group of receipts gives a view other aspects of the community. There are three receipts for annual payments from the estate of Miles Roberts for the support of two minor children ??" 1861 1863 1864. It is not clear why William Sturges is administering the account other than possibly as an employee of the courts. Another note is a request for a pair of shoes for ?William ? although it is not clear whether this is one of the minor children or possibly another dependent of the court. 10 pp approx. 5.5 x 7.5 in. Letter from William R. Holmes to ?Cousin John? ??" (Is this John Sturges??) Castleville Camp Georgia 18 January 1862. Holmes tells John that they are planning to form a regiment from Burke County (and surrounding counties if necessary) when their current terms expire. He notes that he has been asked to be Colonel of the new regiment but would rather not be in charge of all of those men. He would however accept a Lieutenant Colonelcy and suggests Cousin John might make a good Colonel of the unit or Capt. Musgrave if John does not want it. He has the entire group mapped out ??" Herman Perry for adjutant etc. And he notes: Camp fellowship develops what men are as we know our family friends failings so we learn the faults of those we associate with in Camp. We have some noble fellows in our company unfortunately we have lost one noble fellow..[illeg.] Holmes as so many others during the war has his complaints about superior officers. He has a particular problem with Colonel Paul Jones Semmes. He notes that at one point he resigned his commission: The cause of it was Semmes not giving me permission to leave camp when I was sick as I desire to go to a house 1-1/2 miles from camp that I might take mercury which I needed since confined to my tent for three weeks & am just now able to do duty; We do not intend to enlist again before we return home as we are not willing to put ourselves in the power of the Infernal Tyrant that governs the Army of the Potomac. You can??Tt form any idea how very badly we have been treated & what we have had to go through. Col Semmes backed by Johnston & Smith is as damned a tyrant as ever lived. The Old Hell Cat & myself are at sword??Ts point now. I told him at Fairfax C.H. what I thought of his conduct & since then he & I just speak. I expect him to court martial me as I left without & against his orders Camp & went to Warrenton to get some cloths [sic] as I was naked & was determined not to die a natural death from disease but chose rather to be shot so let the old Cuss rip now he has a chance at me. Capt. William R. Holmes enlisted in Co. D 2nd Regt. GA Vol. Infy (Burke Sharpshooters). He was promoted to Lt. Col. 28 Apr. 1862. He was killed at Sharpsburg MD on 17 Sept. 1862 while trying to hold a bridge over the Antietam River against far superior numbers of Union troops while waiting for the main body of Confederate forces to reach it. There is a small group of receipts in this collection from John R. Sturges. There are two promissory notes two receipts for materials one from 1861 for laths presumably associated with the building of his house. A receipt for Jany. 1 1862 is interesting being the account of Col. John R. Sturges for Jan. to April 1861 from R.E.J. Thompson Dealer in Pure Drugs Medicines Oils Brushes Chemicals Perfumery Fancy and Toilet Articles &c. &c. in Waynesboro. The account is for 4 bottles of brandy matches and candles. And certainly the brandy was medicinal??| But John purchased nothing after April ??" the war was on. Three other receipts are interesting even though that they are after John??Ts death. Two are for Frank Barton and the third for Henry Moore. One of the Barton receipts notes that it is to money put in his hands for safe keeping while in Camp during the year 1862. And while the receipt for Henry Moore does not specify that this is the case it is implied that it might be something along these lines. The officers of these units often held pay for the enlisted men if asked to do so. One of the most significant items in the group is the will of John R. Sturges. It was made out in Virginia 17 June 1862. It is actually a fairly simple instrument but has some telling conditions. I John R. Sturges a citizen of the County of Burke State of Georgia now in the service of the Confederate States of America make this my last will and testament??|. I direct that my Executor sell at private or public sale ??| that tract of land lying in Burke county State of Georgia adjoining lands of John R. Whitehead John Scott Mrs. Martha Boyd and others being the tract on which John Owen late of said County of Burke lived and which was bought by me at his administrators sale in the fall of 1858 or 1859. If the proceeds of such sale exceed the principal and interest of the consideration money I paid for the said tract of land??| I direct one half of such excess to be paid to Mrs. Catharine M. Owen of Burke County aforesaid in pursuance of a promise I made to her shortly after the death of her husband John B. Owen that she should share the next profits of the sale of the land. All my property real or personal except the one half of the excess before mentioned I give and bequeath to my beloved brother William U. Sturges of the same County of Burke to have and hold forever. If my niece Mrs. Abby S. Jones wife of Henry H. Jones of Liberty County State of Georgia should wish to have any of my personal effects as a keepsake my Executor will permit her to have whatever she may select??|. Two weeks later he was dead. The question certainly comes up ??" why did he wait a year or more before making a will? Why now? The ?Burke boys? signed up in 1861. Much of the paper associated with the will relate to legal considerations in getting the will recognized in Georgia. But the concern for the Owen family is clear as is his recognition of the widow as deserving of a share in the profits from the land she was working. (Although it raises the obvious question ??" was he merely in favor of women??Ts rights or did he have other designs on this young widow? John Sturges never married.) Overall a varied group of items relating to the period just before the Civil War to the period after. One encounters the same individuals in these receipts and letters ??" the interwoven lives of those in a small close-knit community. Condition: Variable as expected particularly the little receipts and notes.

![Attributed to Charles-Louis Clérisseau](/content/serve_image.php?id=dWNvb2tpZT1jMDY3NTQwZWIyNSwxMzAzNTc2&size=med2&dWNvb2tpZT1jMDY3NTQwZWIyNSwxMzAzNTc2)
Attributed to Charles-Louis Clérisseau (French worked in Italy 1721-1820) "A Chimneypiece in the Neo-Classical Style" c. 1770s/1780s ink and two tones of gray wash on cream-colored laid paper (perhaps with an even paler uniform gray wash) unsigned; watermark(s) partially obscured by repair tapes applied to verso but with letters "...M A..." and "O...M" visible; inscribed on bottom margin with scale representing 6 "Palmi di Genova" (in which 1 Genoese oncia [inch] = 2 Genoese palmi; 1 palmo = 248 mm.); above it in the mouth of the fireplace another scale in different units. Provenance: Roman art market mid-20th century; James R. Lamantia Jr. New Orleans and New York. Note: This extremely beautiful and historically important drawing is a precocious and diagnostic precursor of the Neo-Classical movement. Its principal frieze (in fictive bas-relief) represents Apollo and Minerva at the center with the flanking figures of the Nine Muses carrying their identifying attributes; Juno and Jupiter confront each other in the upper right-hand square panel and two other divinities occupy the left; Mercury and a sister goddess crown the tall reliefs to the sides. This design is strikingly notable for its purity simplicity and sobriety: it displays no other ornaments at all apart from the chaste moldings of a large egg-and-dart and a small bead-and-reel around the mouth of the fireplace a simple beading around the side panels a brief leaf-and-tongue under the square elements and a foliated ovolo and smaller cove (separated by another small bead and by a blank frieze) in the crowning entablature of the mantel shelf. Such conspicuous restraint coupled with such paramount reliance on delicately detailed sculptural forms alone mark this design as a truly startling contrast for example with the Rococo exuberance and Classical complexity of the most celebrated engravings of chimneypieces to be engraved in the preceding decade the Camini of G. B. Piranesi (1720-1778)-issued as 70 etched plates in 1769. Clérisseau a Parisian won the Prix de Rome in 1749 and stayed in the Eternal City for almost twenty years returning to Paris only in 1767 to become a member of the Académie Royale. While in Italy he became a close friend of Piranesi's; he was also tutor to a variety of Northern architects most importantly to Robert (1728-1792) and James Adam (1734-1794) on whose famous-even epochal-style Clérisseau had a fundamental and all-pervasive influence (as witnessed profoundly in this drawing). Clérisseau himself is best known in the United States as the co-designer with Thomas Jefferson of the Virginia State Capitol at Richmond (1785-99) based on the "Maison Carrée" at Nîmes. Clérisseau had become the preeminent authority on such Provençal structures with his Antiquités de la France: Monumens de Nismes (1778); and his long experience of southern France provides a plausible reason whereby his drawings (some 1100 of which are concentrated in the Hermitage St. Petersburg) might have included this sheet measured as it is in Genoese units. Genoa only officially adopted the metric system as of 1 March 1847 so this drawing's citation of Genoese palmi is at once appropriate and unhelpful with regard to dating (for which its watermark is also inconclusive). What can be said is that it very perfectly epitomizes the dawn of Neo-Classicism in Europe and as such it is an artifact of the highest importance. References: Thomas J. The duality of upper and lower worlds is likewise ubiquitous and particularly well developed among Algonquian-speaking groups such as the Menominee, whose hierarchical system has been described by Skinner (1921: 29-31). Among the latter, the most powerful upper world being the sun, followed by the Thunderbirds, and the chief of the underworld was a Great White Bear with a long copper tail, followed by the great Underground Panther and Horned Hairy Serpent (Fox: 2004: 283).

FRANKLIN, Benjamin (printer) - Thomas CADWALADER.An Essay on the West India Dry-Gripes; With the Method of Preventing and Curing that Cruel Distemper. To which is added, An Extraordinary Case in Physick. Philadelphia: B. Franklin, 1745. v, [1], 42 pp., small 4to (190 x 125 mm). Woodcut tailpiece. [Bound after:] [Theodore TRONCHIN]. A Treatise on the Colica Pictonum; or the Dry Belly-Ach. London: W. Johnston, 1764. Translated into English by Ralph Schomberg. 8vo (190 x 125 mm). Together, 2 volumes in one. Early quarter sheep over marbled paper boards, spine ruled in gilt and with red morocco lettering piece. Housed in a morocco-backed clamshell box. Condition: minor foxing, very minor torn area in the upper margin of the terminal text leaf; boards worn at extremities. Provenance: Haskell F. Norman (booklabel, sale Christie’s New York, 15 June 1998, lot 347).the norman copy of among the earliest distinctly american medical books and a rare franklin imprint.Cadwalader (1708-1779) a noted colonial Philadelphia physician, was among the founders of Pennsylvania Hospital and served as a founding trustee of the University of Pennsylvania medical school. In this Essay, Cadwalader’s only published work, he addresses a growing illness afflicting colonial Philadelphians: lead poisoning. Lead colic and lead palsy were “both very common ailments in eighteenth-century America due to the custom of drinking punch made with Jamaica rum, which was distilled in lead pipes” (Norman). Cadwalader advises the discontinuation of the standard treatment of mercury and purgatives and suggests mild cathartics and opium as more effective. The few medical tracts published in America prior to this work dealt largely with smallpox and the question of innoculation, or were reprints of earlier non-American medical works. Cadwalader’s Dry-Gripes was the first published work by an American physician of a broad scientific character based on original research which dealt with the pathology of a specific illness and its treatment. As such, it is considered by some to be the first distinctly American medical book.Of significant note is the additional “Extraordinary Case of Physick” which is appended to the work. In it, Cadwalader describes his autopsy of a woman who suffered from osteomalacia. This account is the first published description of an autopsy in America. The book is very rare with only a handful of institutional copies and only this and one other copy appearing at auction in the last quarter century.[With:] Two typed letters signed from Franklin bibliographer C. William Miller to Haskell Norman, concerning this copy, writing “The Dry Gripes, as you are aware, is a rare item in Franklin bibliography.”Austin 380; Evans 5553; Garrison-Morton 2094; Guerra a-213; Hildeburn 922; Miller 369; Norman 385.

Condition A- / A: minor repaired tear at bottom edge; minor creases and abrasions in image. Little is known about Rotter's early life other than that he received a degree in electro-engineering. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Paris and took up commercial design, working as a decorator in the famous Printemps department store and as a graphic designer with the well-known Damour company. From 1928 to 1939, he ran his own eponymous advertising studio in Prague from which he turned out impressive Art Deco-inspired designs. His work could be seen in magazines, sheet music and posters advertising clothing, travel, events, exhibitions, movies and performances (including a lot of work for the famous Czech comedic duo Voskovec and Werich). Rotter fled Czechoslovakia for England during World War II, where he remained for the rest of his life. Ceskoslovenská Letecká Spolecnost (Czechoslovak Air Transport) was founded in 1927 as a competitor to the older Ceskoslovenska Statnie Aerolinie (Czechoslovak State Airline) and operated until the German invasion in 1939. Rotter depicts a Fokker F.VIIb-3m, which went into service in 1930, flying over the company's route map. This image is so strong it is easy to miss the suggestion of legs beneath the plane - like Mercury carrying the vehicle safely and effortlessly on his back. This is the smaller format and German version. Fly Now! p. 114 (var), Atelier Rotter 30 (var), Czech Posters Between the Wars p. 16 (var).- 1,000

1962 Chevrolet Bel Air "Bubble Top" 2-Door HardtopChassis no. 21637A144885
There were big dogs roaming loose in 1962, threatening to eat anything that dared challenge them and using their success – on the drag strip, Main Street and in the showroom – to grow even bigger and more menacing.
Ford’s big dog was the 406 with three carbs, rated 405hp and available in both Ford and Mercury bodies. Pontiac countered with its 421. With dual quads it claimed 405hp, too. In the early part of the year these dogs chased Mopar’s runt 361 out of the pack so in mid year Plymouth and Dodge took the 413/426 Max Wedge off its leash, claiming 420hp with dual quads. Running full tilt boogey with the rest of the curs was Chevy, who carved away at the innards of their 348 cubic inch V-8 to find another 61 cubic inches, slid a radical cam in under solid lifters and lightweight valve gear, squeezed the mixture provided by pair of four barrel Rochester carbs into 11:1 compression ratio combustion chambers and fitted dual exhausts to extract one horsepower per cubic inch, 409hp at 5,800rpm.
That was pretty good for an engine that was designed and began its life pulling around medium duty trucks.
Chevy had one more trick up its sleeve, too, the body they put this torque monster into. It wasn’t quite the age of the Muscle Car, but Chevy came close by installing the stick shift only 409/409 in a stripped Bel Air 2-door hardtop with rounded roof and back window profile held over from 1961. The regular 1962 Impala hardtops had gotten new squared off roofs and more vertical rear windows beginning the transition into the edgy, straight line look that would debut a year later in 1963. The Impala looked great but about 2/3 of the way to the 1/4 mile traps the 409/409 had propelled it to a velocity where its mediocre aerodynamics began to sap top speed and elapsed time. The rounded roof and steeply sloping back window of the Bel Air was way more efficient.
It also weighed about a hundred pounds less than the more luxurious Impala and two hundred less than the lightest Ford Galaxie hardtop which also had an erect, eddy-inducing rear window. The combination of streamlining and light weight has made the ’62 Bel Air "Bubble Top" 2-door hardtop Sport Coupe one of the most attractive and enjoyable of all early Sixties high performance cars, especially when it has the legendary 409/409 under the hood.
Experienced collectors know that it is difficult if not impossible to establish conclusively that a Chevrolet of this period was built with a stovebolt six or a 409/409 so it is particularly important that the owner of this 1962 Bel Air Bubbletop 409/409 states unequivocally that it is a correct car with matching numbers "right down to the exhaust manifolds." A radio/heater delete car with 4-speed manual transmission, bench seat, steel wheels (8" wide at the rear) with "poverty caps", it has dual 4-barrel carburetors, old California plates and is painted and upholstered in "look out for me" Red. It was the object of a meticulous body off the frame restoration about a decade ago which sympathetically retained its original, and very impressively preserved, interior. It has been carefully preserved since but the high standards of the present owner saw it repainted, in correct "Magic Mirror" lacquer, recently.
This is a legendary automobile that upheld Chevy’s honor on the drag strip and Main Street for several years until the Mark IV 396 and its successors could be designed and put into production starting three years later. The combination of the 409 horsepower, dual quad 409 cubic inch Chevrolet V8 and ’62 Bel Air Bubbletop bodystyle is a milestone in the development of big V-8 American muscle. It also is one of the most attractively designed and styled of the bunch, as well as a one-year only combination that has earned the respect of generations of street racers, drag racers and collectors.

Ford's 1917 Model T truck featured a larger high-set radiator than previous models, as well as crowned fenders and nickel-plated hubcaps. The Tudor sedan was the first Model A built, and was introduced in 1928. This instantly popular automobile could reach a speed of 65 mph. One of Ford's first sporty cars was the 1932 V-8 Sport Roadster, which featured fold-down windshields. These tough cars also had anti-theft locks on the steering columns. In 1941, the Lincoln Continental became a separate model instead of a Zephyr series, and in 1953 the F-100 half-ton pickup -- with a 110-inch wheel base -- debuted. This rugged truck sold for $1, 330. A personal luxury cruiser, the Thunderbird convertible was re-introduced as a four-seater in 1958. Today, the 1996 Mercury Sable embodies the essence of aerodynamic engineering and modern automobile design. . . Image Size: 7. 75 x 13. 5 in. . Overall Size: 15 x 22. 5 in. . Unframed. .
