Joseph Thomas (Exhibited 1850-1853) - Joseph Barrows and his Children in the Garden of Handsworth Hall, Birmingham, signed and dated 1849, ink and watercolour, 52 x 57cm Provenance: anon sale in these 'rooms, 30 November 2012, lot 1007, to the present vendor Joseph Barrows (1804-1890), a prominent citizen of Birmingham, one of the Street Commissioners (the forerunner to the Town Council) founded the firm of Joseph Barrows & Sons, Wine & Spirit Merchants. The business prospered to the extent that by 1849 the recently widowed Barrows had bought Handsworth Hall, a large 18th century home in extensive grounds. It had been the home of Anna Maria Sacheverell and Anne Gough and afterwards Joseph Grice, JP. It was demolished in the 1870s when the area was redeveloped. With black cel affixed at border for two color printing. Edges of boards soiled, not affecting images. Not signed. Good.

WILLIAM STARKWEATHER LANDSCAPE WC PAINTING New York, Connecticut, Spain,1879-1969Depicts bare twisted trees framing waves crashing to shore with seagulls flying over head. Starkweather studied at the Academie Colarossi in Paris wear he first witnessed work done by Joaquin Sorolla, becoming one of his inspirations. He returned to New York working on illustrations for publications and teaching classes before moving to Spain to study under Sorolla before travelling. Starkweather's work had been exhibited at Society of Independent Artists, the American Water Color Society and the Allied Artists of America.
