Stevens Marksman . 22 Long Rifle Single Shot Rifle: Included in this lot is a Stevens Marksman . 22 Long Rifle single shot rifle. Stevens Arms Company, well known for its Tip-up Pistols, Boy's Rifles, and Ideal Target and Sporting Rifles, got its start at Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts in 1864. Founder Joshua Stevens was a New England toolmaker who had gained experience in firearms manufacture while employed at various times by C. B. Allen, Eli Whitney, Samuel Colt, and Edwin Wesson. While employed as production superintendent for the Chicopee Falls-based Massachusetts Arms Co. , he filed a successful patent claim for improvements to percussion pistols produced by this firm. Stevens received a patent for a tip-up pistol design during the same year in which he, along with financial backers W. B. Fay and James Taylor, founded the company that bore his name. The company's early years saw production carried out in a former Chicopee Falls grist mill by fewer than 60 employees. J. Stevens and Co. underwent an expansion in 1880 and in 1886, the firm changed its name to J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co. The Marksman was less common than the popular Stevens' Favorite and other like-size rifles and was made between circa 1912 and 1933 by the Stevens Arms Company, made in Chicopee Falls, Mass. It was a major improvement over its smaller cousin the No. 15 Maynard Jr. and replaced it in 1914. This rifle utilizes a 22” round barrel with dovetailed front sight and rear sight. The rifle has a break lever action design for a single shot . 22 Long Rifle cartridge. The barrel is stamped on top “22 – Long Rifle” and the left of the receiver is marked “J. Stevens Arms Company Chicopee Falls, Mass. U. S. A. – Marksman -. Serial Number: P659. This firearm qualifies as a Curio & Relic, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.

Stevens No. 41 Tip-Up Derringer Pistol c 1864-1916: Stevens No. 41 Tip-Up derringer single shot pistol, serial number 23758. These distinctive . 22 caliber “hide-out” pistols were made from 1864-1916. They found favor with anyone feeling the need for a small, easily concealable handgun. Often they were chosen as “back-up” firearms that could be easily carried and pulled into use should a primary, larger weapon become unserviceable or taken away. With its 3 ½” barrel, overall length of only 6 ½ inches and weight of merely a few ounces, the Stevens No. 41 derringer could be carried in any number of places by both male or female owners without feeling encumbered with a heavy weapon. This pistol is a later example, being manufactured just after the turn of the last century. The half-octagon barrel retains thinning original blue that has aged nicely with no evidence of cleaning or abuse. The entire frame and grip straps are factory nickel plated giving this pistol an attractive two-tone fancy appearance. The walnut grips fit perfectly and are in superb condition. The barrel to frame fit is extremely tight with no looseness or play. Additionally, the hammer spring is strong and the safety notch or “half-cock” holds solidly- many of these are worn and loose in these areas. The barrel top is clearly marked J STEVENS A & T CO. over CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS. U. S. A. A uniquely American derringer pistol from a time when it was common for men and women on both sides of the law to carry a small and light derringer pistol as an ordinary part of their daily apparel. This is a fine example of a scarce and historical weapon. Condition For a complete representation of condition and for additional images please call 800-686-4216. WILLIAM LESTER STEVENS, AMERICAN (1888-1969), POINT PLEASANT, DELAWARE RIVER, CA. 1927-1929, OIL ON CANVAS, 42 X 48 INCHESWILLIAM LESTER STEVENS, American, (1888-1969) Point Pleasant, Delaware River, ca. 1927-1929, oil on canvas signed lower right "W. Lester Stevens" oil on canvas Dimensions: 42 x 48 inches Provenance: A New Jersey estate; Private Collection, Massachusetts. Framed dimensions: 46 7/8 x 53 1/4 x 2 1/2 inches William Lester Stevens was born in Rockport, Massachusetts, a seaside town that had been an established destination for artists. He completed his early formal training with Parker Perkins and then attended the Boston Museum School as a student of Edmund Tarbell, Frank Benson, Philip Hale and William Paxton. In 1917, Stevens joined the Army and was sent to Europe. He painted and sketched while in Europe and when he returned to Rockport found that it had become a destination for artists including Frank Duveneck, Childe Hassam, Leon Kroll and Jonas Lie. Together with his friend, Aldro T. Hibbard, Stevens was instrumental in organizing the Rockport Art Association in 1921 exhibiting the works of fifty area artists.Their shared goal was to make fine art more accessible to a broader audience. Stevens would continue to pursue these goals later in his career by organizing the Conway Festival of the HIlls and the Berkshire Arts Festival. As an established artist, Stevens first taught in Rockport and then from 1925-1926 at Boston University and from 1927-1929 at Princeton. He traveled in the south and had one-man exhibitions in Charlotte and Asheville, North Carolina, where his work was well received. When speaking of Stevens few are aware of his time spent painting in the New Hope, Pennsylvania area from 1927 to 1929. In 1927, he was appointed an instructor of freehand drawing and watercolor at Princeton University. According to his exhibition records, Stevens exhibited two paintings at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with New Hope area subjects, "Winter in New Jersey",1929, and "Lumberville" in 1930. In addition, a painting titled "Lumberville" was exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1929 and at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1930. During his time at Princeton, Stevens was extremely productive and exhibited extensively. In 1928, Stevens exhibited at the American Watercolor Society and won the William S. Delano Prize. He also exhibited at the National Gallery of Art and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Despite his rigorous academic schedule, he produced enough paintings during 1928 to send works to the New Haven Paint and Clay Club where Winter in New Jersey won the Mansfield Prize. Also, during this time he had a one man show at the American Association of University Women at the Public Library in Birmingham, Alabama, followed by an exhibition of over thirty oil paintings at the J.B. Speed Museum in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1929, Stevens gave up his teaching position at Princeton and returned to Rockport. In an article written by Charles Movalli for the 'American Artist' he wrote: "Stevens loved to talk about art - and himself. Steve thought he was the only painter in the world, a friend remembers fondly. He used to joke that 'only God and Lester Stevens can make a tree. He never tired of talking about the time his hero, Edward Redfield, the great outdoor painter, saw a Stevens painting in a show and said, "That kid's going to go far." It is likely that Redfield and his paintings of Point Pleasant first inspired Stevens to visit the area." In 1934, the Stevens family left Rockport and moved to Conway, Massachusetts where the artist remodeled an old farmhouse and built a studio facing Mount Monadnock. He painted throughout his entire life and died in Conway in 1969. By 1964 he had won more awards than any other living artist except for Sargent. Commodore Robert F. Stockton USN (1795-1866) Fore-&-Aft Cap Epaulets and Vest Plus Lot includes fore-and-aft cap antebellum dress epaulets military vest sash and Whig mourning document all belonging to Robert F. Stockton. The Navy fore-and-aft cap is definitely pre-Civil War and was made by R.H. Stevens of Norfolk a maker not found in Bazelon. Richard H. Stevens was found in the 1851-52 Norfolk City directory but his address was then listed as ''Hatmaker City Hotel.'' At the end of the decade Stevens is listed at the No. 7 Market Square address in the 1859-60 Norfolk City Directory. The dates are critical as Stockton was promoted to Captain in December 1838 and resigned in the same rank in May 1850 about the time that R.H. Stevens is listed as working at the earlier ''City Hotel'' address. At best the cap was made about 1850 the same year that Stockton resigned. Alternatively the cap was made for Stockton to wear (on formal or ceremonial occasions) after he left the Navy. The pair of antebellum dress epaulets date from about the same time. They are regulation for a senior Navy Captain or line officer commanding a squadron as indicated by the star. By the time of his resignation in 1850 Stockton was a senior Captain who had commanded US naval forces in the Pacific during operations that annexed California during the Mexican War 1846-47. The lot is accompanied by a notarized letter regarding provenance. Descended Directly in the Family of Robert F. Stockton Condition: Very good overall.

Rare Mallard Drake Harvey Stevens (1847 Rare Mallard DrakeHarvey Stevens (1847-1894)Weedsport, NY c. 1870An extremely rare, early style of decoy by this carver who supplied decoys to sportsmen visiting nearby Howland Island, the Montezuma Swamp, and the Finger Lakes. By the mid-nineteenth century, the Stevens Brothers decoys gained national acclaim and were shipping decoys across the country from their workshop near Weedsport along the Erie Canal. Before the discovery of this important mallard, Stevens' author and historian, Shane Newell, documented only one other early mallard drake tack-eye decoy by this maker. The bird exhibits painted tack eyes, an early carved groove separating the wings, and Stevens' finest scratch-comb paint along the back. It is in outstanding condition for its age, which is approaching 150 years. John Stevens Jr. Woolen Needlework Pocketbook, possibly Perth Amboy, New Jersey, 1774, the envelope-shaped pocket book worked in Irish stitch in a zigzag diamond pattern in shades of yellow, red, pink, purple, green, orange, and brown, with two compartments and a large floral-engraved silver clasp, the inner edge of the book embroidered in white woolen threads on a green background "Iohn Stevens junr November 19, 1774," (minor losses and wear), together with a paper-bound tune book inscribed on the front cover "Esther Freebody/her Book 1786" including four pages of handwritten music. Pocketbook folded dimensions ht. 4 1/2, wd. 8 in. Note: There are two possibilities for the identity of the original owner of this pocketbook. One is John Stevens, Junior (1715/16-1792) who settled in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, in the early 1740s. He served as paymaster of Colonel Peter Schuyler's 1st New Jersey Regiment, the "Jersey Blues," 1756-1760. He was a vocal opponent of the Stamp Act and was part of a committee formed to prevent the issue of the stamps in New York City. Stevens was elected Vice-President of Council of New Jersey in 1776 and served in that capacity until 1782. He also served as president of the convention of New Jersey when the state ratified the Unites States Constitution in 1787. The second possibility is John Stevens III (1749-1838) who was the son of John Stevens Jr. (1715/16-1792). He was an engineer and inventor who graduated from King's College in 1768. During the American Revolution he served as the treasurer for the State of New Jersey and signed New Jersey currency "J Stevens Jun." In 1791 he received a patent for a "boiler for generating steam" and later built a railroad between Trenton and New Brunswick, New Jersey. John Swatsley (B. 1937) "Steamboat Phoenix (1809)": John Swatsley (American, B. 1937) "Steamboat Phoenix (1809)" Signed lower right. Original Oil on Illustration Board painting. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U. S. 25c Steamboat Phoenix stamp issued March 3, 1989. . . In the beginning of the steamboat era, two gentlemen by the names of Fulton and Livingston had a monopoly on steamboat operation in the New York area. Also interested in steamboats was Livingston's brother-in-law, an inventor by the name of John Stevens, Jr. In order to raise money to finish a steamboat, the Clermont, Fulton and Livingston offered to take Stevens as a partner, for a price. He refused to pay, and in turn told them he was building a boat, the Phoenix, that was much superior to the Clermont. If he wasn't given a partnership, he would put his boat into competition with the Clermont and ruin their business. Fulton and Livingston offered Stevens a one-fifth share, but he had decided he wanted to be recognized as the inventor of the steamboat. Thus, Stevens launched the Phoenix in defiance of the Fulton-Livingston monopoly. He worked his steamboat on the Hudson and in New Jersey waters for close to a year, and when Fulton-Livingston succeeded in having the Phoenix legally tied up, he decided to move her to the Delaware, far from their territory. It was a weighty decision, for it meant the craft would have to swim through more than 150 miles of open ocean. Nevertheless, even though she was a boat designed to run in protected waters, the Phoenix set out to sea, with Captain Moses Rogers as her master. Thirteen days later, the Phoenix reached Philadelphia. The successful completion of her journey earned the little side-wheeler her place in American history. . . Image Size: 14 x 12 in. . [JAMES MADISON] 1801 LETTER1801 letter of introduction for Jacob Mayer, Esquire, to meet with James Madison, then secretary of State to Thomas Jefferson. Mayer became U. S. consul to the port of Cap-Francais in 1796 and was removed from office in May 1800. Letters held in the National Archive document the political intrigue surrounding Mayer. Once Edward Stevens was confirmed as Consul General to Saint-Domingue he sailed for the West Indies aboard the Kingston, heavily laden with provisions and luxury items. Part of the cargo was consigned to the representative of a Haitian General, part was consigned to Mayer, and the bulk went to Stevens to help pay for the cost of the endeavor. Mayer accused Stevens of exploiting his position to benefit himself and then Secretary of State Timothy Pickering. The Philadelphia Aurora broke the story of the scandal prompting George Washington to inquire about the veracity of the accusations. Pickering tried to undermine Mayer's credibility to President John Adams in a letter saying, "The unfitness of Mr. Mayer to hold the office of Consul seems so apparent to the Secretary he has thought it to be his duty to accompany this communication with the recommendations he finds in his file." This letter written by an unidentified author says Mayer "will visit the seat of government for the purpose of communicating with the administration on the subject of our affairs in that quarter.", referring to the scandal with Stevens. The back of the letter is inscribed "My letter of introduction of Jacob Mayer to James Maddison Esquire Secretary of State May 9th 1801 Copy. Madison's name is misspelled throughout. For about thirty years he was engaged in preparing a chronological list and alphabetical index of American state papers in English, French, Dutch and Spanish archives, covering the period from 1763 to 1784, and he prepared more than 2000 facsimiles of important American historical manuscripts found in European archives and relating to the period between 1773 and 1783.
He also acted as purchasing agent for various American libraries, and for about thirty years before his death was US dispatch agent at London and had charge of the mail intended for the vessels of the United States Navy serving in Atlantic or European stations. He died at Surbiton, Surbiton, Surrey, England, on the 5 March 1902. He is buried at Kensal Green Cemetery, London. The task of assembly and editing was done in a meticulous fashion by B.F. Stevens, the son of Henry Stevens of Vermont and successor to his father in the family book firm. This is a resource for research on the political, diplomatic, and military phases of the Revolution, and many of the documents remain otherwise unpublished and can only be seen by visiting London or Paris, and since the index volume provides an invaluable cross-referencing and indexing of the inclusive documents. Only 200 sets were produced.Condition / Notes: This antique set, one of 200 produced, is bound in red three-quarter leather with red cloth covers and raised bands and stamped gilt ornamentation on the spines. These volumes feature various levels of external wear, with detached boards and/or cracked hinges on certain volumes and light soiling and rubbing to the edges of covers and spines on the majority of the books.
The text blocks are firm and are adorned with gilt top edges and other deckled edges as well as marbled endpapers. Library bookplates are affixed to the front pastedowns. The interiors are clean with mild age toning.
This set has been collated and has been found to be complete with the possible exception that no document 1063 is present in volume XI, nor is a cover sheet to be found. The book shows no evidence of pages having been removed at that location so this skip may be a printer error or a deliberately skipped document. The table of contents for that volume does call for a document 1063 from March 10, 1778, entitled “Merchants of London trading to North America – Petition to the King.” There are 110 plates, and 41 documents have a foldout or double-page format.
For lots which include only books, our shipping charge applies to any address within the fifty United States. WILL HENRY STEVENS PASTEL LANDSCAPE PAINTING, HAY BARNWill Henry Stevens (Indiana/Louisiana/N.C/Tennessee, 1881-1949), "Hay Barn," pastel on paper landscape painting depicting a man raking hay from a horse-drawn wagon into a central barn set in the middle of a field, while gray clouds threaten overhead. A bare tree stands in the foreground. Signed "Stevens" lower left. Matted and framed under glass in an ebonized frame with a gilt sight edge. Sight - 16" x 13". Frame - 24" x 21". Biography (from the Johnson Collection): "An abiding love of nature - especially as borne out in the Southern landscape - informed the life and work of painter, poet and teacher Will Henry Stevens. Born in Vevay, Indiana, Stevens enrolled at the Cincinnati Art Academy in 1901 where his teachers included Frank Duveneck and Lewis Henry Meakin. In 1904, he won a design competition sponsored by Cincinnati's famous Rookwood Pottery and was subsequently hired as a tile designer. Two years later, Stevens undertook studies at the Art Students League in New York with William Merritt Chase and developed associations with Van Dearing Perrine and Jonas Lie in the city. His first one-man show was held at the New Gallery in 1907. Over the course of his career, Stevens' expansive intellectual curiosity and interest in experimental art forms led him to work in varied media and innovative styles, producing both realist and abstract expressions. In 1921, Stevens became a member of the faculty at Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans, teaching there until his retirement in 1948. He plumbed the lush Louisiana landscape for subject matter during the school year, while the summers were reserved for travels to the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. Stevens was a popular teacher at several art colonies in the South, including Black Mountain, North Carolina. Throughout his career, he maintained friendships with Robert Henri, George Bellows, and other artists, and closely followed the modernist scene in New York. His work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Morris Museum of Art, and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston."

CARRIE G. STEVENS MEMORABILIA IN SHADOW BOX UPPER DAM, RANGELEY, MAINE, 20TH CENTURY 27.5” X 15.5”.CARRIE G. STEVENS MEMORABILIA IN SHADOW BOX, Upper Dam, Rangeley, Maine, 20th Century, Includes five photographs of Stevens, five streamers with two on her cards, and a small advertisement for her flies. Wood and glass shadow box with birch bark backing. Dimensions: 27.5" x 15.5". Provenance: Carrie Stevens (1882-1970), who was born and lived her entire life in the state of Maine -- never leaving its borders -- created her first fly in July 1924. From there, she would revolutionize the world of fly tying. She called her first pattern "Shang's Go-Getum", and it caught her a prize-winning brook trout the first day she used it. After Field & Stream magazine published her account of the trophy catch, she immediately began receiving orders for flies. She created dozens of patterns and thousands of streamer flies, which she sold to private clients and in stores and camps around Rangeley, Maine, where she lived.

Cayuse Chief Poor Crane Also Known as Cutmouth John Quarter Plate Tintype Remarkable quarter plate tintype of American Indian chief identified as?Yehtiinwic or?Poor Crane?(ca 1814-1891) whose name indicates that he was Cayuse although it has also been suggested that he was Umatilla.?Poor Crane's frontier nickname was Cutmouth John which he acquired in the spring of 1850 during an?intra-Cayuse battle when the murderers of the Whitman family were captured then delivered to Oregon authorities who summarily hanged them. The Whitman massacre occurred in 1847 when U.S. missionaries Dr. Marcus Whitman his wife Narcissa and eleven others were killed by Cayuse and Umatilla Indians. Following the Whitman massacre Poor Crane?acted as an Indian Scout for several figures including Washington Governor Isaac I. Stevens and various military officers assigned to the area such as Philip Sheridan. Poor Crane?was prominently involved in the events of 1855-1859 including the Yakima Indian War. ?In the tintype studio portrait Poor Crane?wears what looks to be a red wool shirt accented with brass buttons and covered with brass armbands. He also wears wool leggings decorated with strips of pony beadwork and fringed with tan ermine skins plus beaded moccasins. A flintlock Dragoon pistol lays across Poor Crane's?lap protected by a beaded case. The brass butt-ferule of the pistol grip has been carefully accented with gilt. The context and care devoted to this portrait suggests that it was possibly made for one of the officers whom Poor Crane?had served. It has also been suggested that this portrait was made ca 1878-1879 at the conclusion of the Bannock War following the death of Paiute Chief Egan whom Poor Crane?is known to have killed. A standing portrait of Poor Crane from the University of Washington Libraries Special Collections depicts Poor Crane with a scalp hanging from his tomahawk haft the scalp identified as that of Chief Egan. Although the library dates the standing portrait to ca 1865 it has been suggested that the portrait was taken around the same time as the seated portrait of Poor Crane. ?It has been discovered that Poor Crane was one of the best-documented individuals in Plateau history and one of the earliest references to Poor Crane was made in 1839 by a wandering lawyer named Thomas Jefferson Farnham. In?Travels in the Great Western Prairies Farnham recalled:?The "poor crane" was an honest honourable man; and I can never think of all his kind acts to me from the time I met him in the plains beyond the Wallawalla mission till I left him sick on the bank of the Columbia without wishing an opportunity to testify my sense of his moral worth and goodness of heart in some way which shall yield him a substantial reward for all he suffered in my service.?In 1855 Poor Crane was the scout who guided Washington Territory Governor Isaac I. Stevens' party to the council grounds at Walla Walla where the treaty of 1855 was negotiated and signed. Three years later during the early months of the Yakima War of 1858 Poor Crane scouted for the young Philip Sheridan and from that same period the following description of Poor Crane referred to as Cutmouth John was written by Lieutenant Lawrence Kip in Army Life on the Pacific: ?A Journal:We reached Fort Walla Walla July 19th [1858] after a march of twelve and a half days. The fort is almost on the ground of the Walla Walla council which I attended three years ago where these tribes we are now to fight [Coeur d'Alene Spokan & Palouse] were all represented and their great leader Kamiahkin was himself present. It is in a beautiful spot of the Walla Walla valley well wooded and with plenty of water. At this post are stationed four companies of the First Dragoons and two of the Ninth Infantry...One of the first persons who came into camp to see us was a Cayuse Indian Cutmouth John who was Lieutenant Gracie's guide through this country three years ago when I accompanied him on his march with a detachment of the Fourth Infantry to act as an escort for Governor Stevens at the Walla Walla council. This worthy had a dreadful distortion of visage from having been shot in the mouth...hence his sobriquet...John?seemed very glad to see me after our long separation and during the expedition was a visitor almost every evening at our tent. He was exceedingly fond of talking about his former connection with the mission and yet it must be acknowledged that he had not retained much of [what he had] learned while there. His sole stock consisted of two or three hymns with which he always insisted on favoring us particularly when he had imbibed too much whiskey a contingency occurring far more frequently than was for his own good. (31-32).Our sincere thanks to Mike Cowdrey?and Nakia Williamson-Cloud for providing detailed information regarding this historical figure.? Condition: Some wear to plate; housed in full case.?

Stevens 425 High Powered . 32Rem Lever Action Rifle: For sale in this lot is a Stevens Model 425 High Power Lever Action Repeating Rifle chambered in . 32 Remington Center Fire Caliber, serial number 1609. The Stevens Model 425 High Power rifle was only made in very limited numbers from 1910-1917. It is now considered so scarce that many Stevens collectors, if even aware of this model‰Ûªs existence, have never seen an example, much less have been able to obtain one! The Stevens Company was well known for their beautiful sporting and target single shot rifles and pistols. It is generally thought that by 1910, when their Model 425 rifle was introduced that the lever action rifle market was so dominated by Winchester and, to a lesser extent Marlin, that there was no room for Stevens to make inroads against proven products already in use and general acceptance by the shooting public. As good as the Stevens Model 425 was and as good as the cartridges it fired were, there simply was no way for Stevens to compete with Winchester and Marlin, so they discontinued their only effort to manufacture a lever action rifle after only a few short years. Examples in any condition are rare and most that come on the collector market show hard use and often abuse. This example retains excellent deep receiver blue as well as displaying fine barrel and magazine blue. The bore is excellent and bright, the screw heads are excellent and the wood fixtures show deep finish, with excellent tight wood to metal fit. Interestingly, the Stevens steel crescent butt plates are checkered and this rifle retains the original butt plate (these often replaced with later recoil pads). Tight action and high condition make this a remarkable find for the Stevens, lever action rifle or general firearms collector. The rifle qualifies as a Curio & Relic Long Gun, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Serial Number: 1609.
