Mrs. M.A. Maxwell titled the ''Colorado Huntress'' by the media of her day was approached by the Colorado State Legislature in 1875 to exhibit her comprehensive collection of taxidermied animals and birds collected in Colorado. She arranged over 100 mammals and nearly 400 birds in a miniature landscape that included a stream flowing down a mountain and terminating in a lake. The water and bank were filled with aquatic creatures such as fish beaver muskrat and waterfowl. Groups of bears mountain sheep mountain lions looked down from the mountain while majestic buffalo elk and antelope roamed the Plains. An article about her appeared in The Journal of Mammology Vol. 24 No. 4 (Nov. 1943) naming her a ''Pioneer Mammologist '' acknowledging her vast contribution to natural science.
