IRISH MARKET ARMORIAL PLATE, MACGREGORIRISH MARKET ARMORIAL PLATE, MACGREGOR Qianlong Era, circa 1780 decorated with the arms of MacGregor and Gaelic motto "S'rioghal Mo Dhream" For example see "Chinese Armorial Porcelain" vol. 1, p. 651, by D.S. Howard Foot note: This plate undoubtedly was part of a larger suite of Chinese Armorial Porcelain that was commissioned by Sir John Murray MacGregor of Macgregor, the 1st Baronet of Lanrick in the County of Perthshire (born 10th April 1745 died 28th June 1822). Sir John was the eldest son of Even MacGregor alias Murray and his wife, Janet Macdonald, the daughter of John Macdonald of Balcomie in the County of Fifeshire. He married Anne Macleod (died 5th February 1830), the daughter of Roderick Macleod of Bernera in the County of Ross-shire in 1774. As the name of MacGregor had been outlawed in consequence of the Jacobite Rebellions of the mid-18th century, Sir John used the surname of Murray until the repeal of the Act of Parliament in 1774 that allowed Sir John to resume the original surname of the family and he was officially recognized as the 18th Chief of the Clan Gregor. Sir John served as a Lieutenant Colonel with the Honourable East India Company Service and was also the Auditor General for Bengal. He was created as a Baronet styled ?of Lanrick? within the Baronetage of Great Britain on the 3rd July 1795. Given that the baronet?s augmentation does not appear on the arms as shown would indicate that the manufacture of this plate would date between 1774 when Sir John could once again use his patronymic and his creation as a baronet in 1795.
