Fessenden ink identified on verso by Wearn & Hix of Columbia S.C. Joshua Abbe Fessenden of Rockland Maine enlisted as a Sergeant in Co. B 1st Maine Cavalry in October of 1861. He resigned the following August to be commissioned into the U.S. Army 5th Light Infantry and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant within a month. Fessenden was breveted 1st Lieutenant following the battle at Stone's River (12/31/1862) breveted Captain following Chickamauga (9/20/1863) and made full 1st Lieutenant in late 1865. CDV of Col. Thomas Roberts 17th Maine Infantry pencil identified on verso by an anonymous publisher. Roberts of Portland was commissioned a Colonel in the 17th Maine Infantry in July 1862 and discharged for disability the following June. CDV of N.A. Hersom Surgeon 17th ME ink identified on recto by photographer J.W. Black of Boston and Newport. Nahum A. Hersom of Sanford Maine was commissioned a Surgeon in the 17th on April 11 1863 and served the remainder of the war including at Gettysburg. CDV by Peter McAdams of Alexandria Virginia ink identified on verso as William H. Ayers 1st Maine Cavalry My best Friend. Ayers of Charlotte Maine served with Co. D of the 1st Maine Cavalry from October 1861 through the end of the war. His Co. D 1st Regiment kepi is clearly visible on the table beside him. He is listed as having spent time recuperating from illness at Alexandria in 1862 and may have had this photo taken then. Postwar CDV of Charles P. Lord wearing a GAR badge and cap signed on verso Yours Truly C.P. Lord / Co. C. 6th Mass Vols 3 months / Co. F. 8th Maine Vols 3 years. Lord of Lowell MA and North Berwick ME served from the outbreak of the war in mid-April 1861 until December 1863 rising from Private to 1st Lieutenant. CDV by Johnson's New Photo Rooms Vineland New Jersey. Postwar cabinet card of Samuel L. Miller / Lt. 20th ME Inf. ink identified on verso. Miller who wears a GAR badge and pin in the photograph also served as a Quarter Master Sergeant in the 20th and as Commander of the GAR Department of Maine ca 1891.
