WINFRED REMBERT, American, (1945-2021) "Red Note Chain Gang", 2007, dye on carved and tooled leather signed lower center "Winfred Rembert" dye on carved and tooled leather 33 x 42 1/2 inches Provenance: The artist; Private Collection, Connecticut. Framed dimensions: 33 3/4 x 43 3/4 x 1 1/4 inches "I've painted a lot of pictures of the chain gang. I believed that many people in the free world thought bad of the chain gang. They looked at the workers on the chain gang, working on the highways and in the ditches, and I believe they thought that all the guys were killers. With the paintings, I was trying to show that it wasn't that way." Winfred Rembert was born in Cuthbert, Georgia in 1945. As a child he picked cotton and as a teenager he was arrested in the aftermath of a civil rights demonstration. He later broke out of jail, survived a near-lynching and spent seven more years in prison where he was forced to work on a chain gang. He was released in 1974 and settled in New Haven, Connecticut. When he was fifty-one years old, encouraged by his wife Patty Gammage, he began carving and painting memories from his youth. He used leather and leather-tooling skills he had learned in prison to create his unique and colorful compositions. "With my paintings, I tried to make a bad situation look good. You can't make the chain gang look good in any way besides by putting it in art. Those black and white stripes look good on canvas. People can't really tell what they are until they get up close. They don't recognize those stripes as people until they take a real good look. That was my goal– to put it down so you can't understand it until you take a real up-close look. That tells you something about prison life. When you look at it from the outside, you can't see what's going on, but when you're up close you realize what you are up against." [1] In the present composition it appears as though the rhythmic movements of the figures are creating the musical notes superimposed on them. On closer inspection, they are picking cotton and loading it into the gray sacks carried on their backs. As in other works by Rembert, the music is likely a song connected to living a better life away from the cotton fields. Rembert was a self-taught artist using skills he learned in prison to create his colorful, three-dimensional compositions. As a child, he went to work on the cotton fields never learning to read or write. His intuitive sense of color and composition were recognized and in 2010 Adelson Galleries organized the first one-man show of Rembert's work in New York City. In 2000, he was the subject of a major exhibition at Yale University Art Gallery. Today, his works are displayed alongside noted African American artists including Jacob Lawrence, Hale Woodruff, Horace Pippin and Romare Bearden. PAINTED VELLUM BINDING - WATTS, Isaac (1674-1748).The Psalms of David. [BOUND WITH:] Hymns and Spiritual Songs. London: printed for and by J.W. Pasham, 1778. 2 works in one volume. 12mo (4 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches; 115x60 mm). Contemporary painted vellum gilt by edwards of halifax , covers with gilt-tooled borders enclosing central ovals under-painted in grisaille with the upper cover depicting a draped female figure holding a cross, on a blue wash background, and Christ above on three soldiers on the lower cover, the flat spine divided into compartments by a gilt roll over a dark blue wash background, the second compartment lettered in gilt over a dark blue wash background, the others with typical repeat decoration in gilt of a large central lyre shape with small floral tools at each corner, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, a.e.g., contained in its original limp green morocco gilt slipcase. Housed in a modern morocco backed box. Condition : small ink spots to the margins of a few leaves. Provenance : Harriot Whitbread (daughter of the brewer Samuel Whitbread, two presentation inscriptions, one from her cousin, the prison reformer John Howard, dated 1785, and a second from "M.[artha?] Howard of Cardington", Bedfordshire, dated 1787); James Gordon (Moor-Place, Hertfordshire, armorial bookplate).a spectacular example of the work produced by edwards of halifax with an intriguing provenance. Edwards developed a method of painting in reverse on the underside of the vellum: a method which allowed for great delicacy whilst also protecting the paintings from damage. Edwards’ success with the fashionable elite spawned a number of imitators in the last quarter of the 18th century, but none of them matched the quality that is so evident in the present work. The technique fell into disuse for over a century until it was revived (in a slightly altered form) by Chivers of Bath in the last few decades of the 19th century.

Framed R. Santiago Painting - "Thanksgiving" ca. 2015: **Originally Listed At $900**. . Roseta Santiago (American, b. 1946). "Thanksgiving" - oil on linen, ca. 2015. Signed by artist on lower right. "Thanksgiving o/linen R. Santiago 16x20" written in red on the verso. A striking still-life by artist Roseta Santiago featuring several ears of Indian corn (or flint corn) with kernels and a bowl arranged upon a tabletop that is covered with deer or buffalo hide. Santiago's command of tenebroso - a Baroque innovation in representing light to capture strong light and dark contrasts - is evident as the light shines upon the objects and creates striking shadow effects. The ensemble of objects - Indian corn, pottery, and buffalo or deer hide - speaks to the history of New Mexico and the indigenous of the Southwest. According to the Autry Museum of the American West's description of Roseta Santiago's oeuvre, "She paints the beauty and integrity surrounding each of her subjects—usually objects that have been made by hand with primitive tools and resources—and is a master storyteller about the images she paints. " Size: 19. 25" W x 15. 4" H (48. 9 cm x 39. 1 cm); (frame): 24. 625" W x 20. 625" H (62. 5 cm x 52. 4 cm). . The Autry Museum of the American West's complete artist biography reads, "Roseta Santiago was born and raised in Washington, D. C. , where she studied graphic design and advertising. In 1976 she moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and then to Miami, Florida, spending twenty-four years designing, installing, and building themed public spaces. She was also contracted to paint murals in twenty-three Bass Pro Shops’ premier sporting goods stores in the U. S. , Puerto Rico, and Costa Rica. In 2000, after moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico, Santiago realized her dream of becoming a fine art painter. Self-taught, she paints every day. . Mystery and light engulf the unique Western and Asian artifacts that are the subjects of her early body of work. She paints the beauty and integrity surrounding each of her subjects—usually objects that have been made by hand with primitive tools and resources—and is a master storyteller about the images she paints. Her current body of work expresses feelings and stories about the people who made these objects. 'Traditional peoples are fascinating to me; their beliefs, regalia, ceremonies, and day-to-day life. '. . Recognized and collected internationally, Santiago’s work may be found in the permanent collections of the Tucson Museum of Art, the Booth Museum of Western Art, and many private collections. She has successfully exhibited for nine years at the Eiteljorg’s Quest for the West Art Show and Sale; the Taos Museum–Fechin House in Taos, New Mexico; the Desert Caballeros Western Museum’s Cowgirl Up! show; the Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale, and Settlers West’s American Miniatures exhibition. ". . Santiago is also a featured artist in the book "Western Art of the Twenty-first Century: Native Americans" by E. Ashley Rooney. You can read more about her in, "Conversations in Paint Language: The Art of Roseta Santiago. " . . ERIC SLOANE, AMERICAN (1905-1985), STONE BARN IN AUTUMN, OIL ON MASONITE, 20 X 39 INCHESERIC SLOANE, American, (1905-1985) Stone Barn in Autumn, oil on masonite signed lower left "Eric Sloane NA" oil on masonite Dimensions: 20 x 39 inches Provenance: Property from a distinguished American collection. -- Eric Sloane was born Everard Jean Hinrichs in 1905 to an upper middle-class family. He took an early interest in art and learned to paint letters and signs from his neighbor the noted font inventor, Frederic Goudy. As a young artist he painted the markings on planes flying out of Roosevelt Field in Long Island. Famed American aviator, Wiley Post, taught Sloane how to fly in exchange for painting lessons. Amelia Earhart is said to have purchased his first cloud painting and his largest cloud painting is on the wall of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. (a commission he earned at age 75). Sloane left home at a young age and worked as a sign painter in various locations, most notably a stay in Taos, New Mexico. In 1925, he traveled throughout the Northeast where he became enamored with the covered bridges, barns, stone walls, and farmhouses dating to the colonial era. He felt the spirit of America in the early architecture and would paint, draw, and write about his perspectives for a career that spanned six decades. In the 1950s he started writing and sketching books on his version of Americana, focused primarily on New England and Pennsylvania farmhouses, barns and landscapes. In 1953 he purchased and restored a farm in Brookfield, Connecticut and moved to various towns in the region of Lake Candlewood including Merryall and Warren where kept a home until 1985. He painted early American scenes especially the barns and covered bridges of Western Connecticut. The present lot, Stone Barn in Autumn, depicts a stone barn set in rolling hills dappled with light. Attuned to architecture and weather, Sloane's paintings capture the spirit of a place by taking into consideration every visual element and clue in the architecture and landscape but also the effects of the air on the light and shadows. In addition to his success as an artist he is credited as an authority on rural American architecture and early American tools. His extensive tool collection outgrew his home in Warren and he donated them to the Sloane-Stanley Museum in Kent, Connecticut. --- Framed dimensions:28 x 46 3/4 x 1 3/4 inches Tags: oil painting, Americana, Pennsylvania, New England, Autumn Condition: very good condition with a few minor spots of inpaint upper edge due to frame rub, in a period Eric Sloane frame Condition

Tim O'Toole (B. 1949) "Tanzania Wildlife": Tim O'Toole (American, B. 1949) "Tanzania Wildlife" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Tanzania Mint Stamp of the World Panel in 1987. . . Tanzania is an African nation found on the eastern coast of the continent . and the country exhibits a remarkable array of cultures which today live and work side by side. The earliest clue of man in Tanzania dates back into history one and a fourth million years -- rock paintings, mounds and other prehistoric evidence can be found in the Olduvai Gorge of a manlike creature called australopithecus. In recent history, Arab traders -- intent on profiting from the slave trade -- settled on the coast of Tanzania. Later, Asians came to Tanzania . and today these groups live alongside the natives of the nation. Most of the natives of Tanzania speak Swahili . the national language and perhaps the most useful language in all of Africa. Settlers coming to Tanzania brought with them their religions and customs . and although a majority of the tribal peoples practice animism -- a belief that all things in nature have spirits there are some Christians. Sunni Muslems live on the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar. Zanzibar has been famous through the ages for its spices, especially cloves -- and it remains so today. Both the islands and mainland of Tanzania have some of Africa's most exciting wildlife. Mount Kilimanjaro -- the tallest mountain on the African continent -- towers over the famous Serengeti plains of northern Tanzania, where a multitude of African wildlife thrives. Gazelles, elephants and crocodiles are just a few of the animals to be found in the rivers and plains of Tanzania. . . Image Size: 27 x 21. 75 in. . Overall Size: 30 x 24 in. . Unframed. .
