THOMAS HOVENDEN THE OLD SHAVER ETCHING Pennsylvania, New York, France, Ireland,1840-1895Titled "The Old Shaver," depicts an older man standing with a razor blade and a shaving brush. Hovenden moved to New York from Ireland working as a gilder and frame maker while attending classes at the National Academy of Design before leaving for France seeking instruction from Jules Breton, ultimately ending up under the guidance of Alexandre Cabanel. Hovenden spent his time in France at the Pont-Aven art colony where he met his wife before moving back to the United States becoming a Professor at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
