ASIAN: LARGE GILT AND LACQUER BUTSUDAN CABINET SHRINE OR ALTAR, JAPANESE, 18TH C., OVOID FORM IN TWO PIECES WITH DOMED TOP, BLACK LA...ASIAN: Large gilt and lacquer Butsudan cabinet shrine or altar, Japanese, 18th C., ovoid form in two pieces with domed top, black lacquer exterior with pierced and etched brass mounts and hardware, stepped moulded crest with cloud design, decorative brass escutcheon depicts an eight-spoked wheel of dharma, lock mechanism in the shape of two phoenix (symbol of peace and tranquility), gilded interior, three shelves with black and red lacquer dragon form supports, interior doors with Bodhisattva paintings, left depicts Fugen riding white elephant representing compassion and benevolence, right depicts Monju riding a lion representing wisdom and knowledge (combined with a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha in the shrine they create the Shakyamuni Triad), ovoid base with red lacquer insets of lotus carvings and metal mounts, wear consistent with age and use including loss, small damages, possible repairs, etc., sold as found, 67 1/2" h. x 38 1/2" w. x 21 1/2" d.
