English School, 18th century portrait of john penn (1700-1746) Unsigned, oil on canvas, framed. H: 29 1/4 in. W: 22 1/2 in. (sight) PROVENANCE: NOTE: John Penn, known as 'The American', was the only child of William Penn (1644-1718) to be born in America. Born on January 29, 1699/1700 in Philadelphia, his mother was William Penn's second wife, Hannah Margaret Callowhill (1671-1727). John spent much of his life in England, mostly in Bristol or at a house in Berkshire. It was said of John Penn that he 'was quite an amiable man'.(1) He returned to Philadelphia between 1730 and 1735 and spent a year here, attending to his inheritance, including a dispute with Lord Baltimore over the Maryland border, later known as the Mason-Dixon Line. He died a bachelor on October 25, 1746 and is buried in Jordans, a Quaker community near Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire.
