Poplar secondary wood; two part construction. Broken arch pediment with carved rosettes flanking a pierced, scrolled central finial; flame and urn finials at each front corner, over a foliate and cartouche carved frieze; the top case paneled in back and having three short drawers over two drawers over three long graduated drawers, all hand-dovetailed, the lower case with one long drawer over three short drawers, the central lower drawer profusely carved with shell and foliate decoration, over a shell and foliate carved skirt. Inset, fluted columns at front corners of both top and bottom sections; all supported on four cabriole legs with foliate carved knees ending in ball and claw and feet. Unsigned. 92"H overall x 41 1/2" W x 22"D. Provenance: The Uthmanor Shop of Nashville was owned and operated by Otto Uthmann and his sons Charles and Gert Uthman from the 1940s to the 1960s. They specialized in benchmade reproductions of museum furniture, most constructed in traditional methods using Honduran mahogany. This piece and a matching lowboy (also offered in this auction) were in the personal collection of Charles Uthman and passed to the consignor, a family member, on his death in 1996.
