Color etching on paper
5 3/4" x 3 3/4" (plate size)
Pencil-signed and numbered (#1/1) to the bottom margin. Presented behind glass in a wooden frame that measures 13 3/4" x 8 3/4".
The title is likely adapted from James Joyce's memorable closing to A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man : “Old father, old artificer, stand me now and ever in good stead.” The passage in the image reads: "Artificer. Look at what you do. It is maladjustment. Maker of ether who sucked of ether, rendering passionate mistakes. The rendering the misgiving: self-effacing; the discharge in desperation, of poison fumes."
Provenance : From the Bill & Ellen Morgan collection. Bill Morgan is a professor emeritus of English at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. It was there that he befriended Nicolas Africano, and he quickly became a patron and collector of the Africano's work as well; for a time Morgan rented Africano a room, occasionally accepting artwork in lieu of payment. This far-reaching collection from an early adopter gives a unique opportunity to access rare early works and get an expansive view of the artist during several pivotal moments in his journey.
Alternate spelling : Nicholas Africano
Condition
Good condition. There is a little bit of rubbing to the green running vertically along the left side of the image from contact with the glass, a bit of outgassing to the inside of the glass, and very mild smudging in the bottom margin. Not removed from the frame.

- CSA CHAPLAIN WITHERSPOON DIARY, AUTOBIOGRAPHY1862
CSA CHAPLAIN WITHERSPOON DIARY, AUTOBIOGRAPHY1862 Confederate diary of T. D. Witherspoon, Chaplain of the 2nd and 42nd Mississippi Regiment, starting July 7th, 1862-Dec. 31, 1862, together with an 1875 autobiography penned by Chaplain Witherspoon. Chaplain Thomas Dwight Witherspoon was born in Greensborough, Alabama in 1836. He graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1856 and became pastor of the Presbyterian church at Oxford, Mississippi. He became a chaplain in the Confederate army and served for the duration of the Civil War. After the war, he was awarded a Doctorate of Divinity from University of Mississippi in 1868 and an Honorary Doctorate in 1884. For most of the war, Witherspoon served as part of the 42nd Mississippi Infantry, Davis' Brigade, Heth's Division, A. P. Hill Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. At the Battle of Gettysburg, Witherspoon was captured on Sunday, July 5th, 1863 while conducting a service for the wounded in a hospital tent. Chaplain Witherspoon was imprisoned at Fort McHenry, Baltimore, and paroled in 1863. He returned to the Confederate army until the surrender at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Witherspoon was an influential and outspoken Chaplain in the Confederate Army (ref. "Pastor Witherspoon Goes to War", Ronald Coddington, New York Times, April 09, 2011). 1st item - Diary starting July 7th, 1862 and concluding December 31st, 1862 (222 pages total). A large portion of the diary covers Chaplain Witherspoon's period in Richmond and the battle of Fredericksburg, VA. On 7/22/62, Witherspoon writes of visits to the battlefield of Seven Pines, "The first thing that attracted our notice was the immense swarm of flies which blackened the ground, and which having tasted blood of decaying flesh were perfectly rabid in their attacks upon our horses.." On page 65 titled "Frazier's Farm", Witherspoon's group came upon a "free negro whose house is perforated with hundreds of balls, says the victory was very complete on our side but our loss was fully as great as the enemy's he thinks even greater...the Yankees carried off great numbers of their dead while ours was all buried in the field." 7/28/62 - Witherspoon applies for a furlough to visit hospitals in Lynchburg at General Hood's office. He overhears General Hood say, "Grant it, of course...Let chaplains go to see the sick and wounded or anywhere else they want to go. I don't care, sir, where they go or how long they stay". Witherspoon wonders if this is an insult or compliment. On 8/28/62 - He is called to conduct a funeral service for a fallen officer. He goes to the hospital 'death house' with a group to retrieve the body and finds that during the night, "rats have eaten the face (of the deceased) so as to disfigure it most shockingly". 9/18/62 - Witherspoon goes to the War Department to inquire on a petition and is ushered into the Secretary's office. The individuals present include Senator Brown of Mississippi (who is "pacing up and down the floor"), an unnamed Senator from Kentucky, and the Speaker of the House, Mr. Bocock. On page 187 regarding Fredericksburg titled "Defending the Ford", Witherspoon gives a detailed account of the placement of the 42nd Mississippi at the fords of the Rappahannock River to prevent Union forces from crossing. He writes, "The fact was apparent that we were left without any support whatever. Neither cavalry or artillery were willing to support us..." Later, Witherspoon's regiment is sent to Goldsboro, NC, and the diary closes in December 1862 with an account of Witherspoon battling Typhoid fever (transcription summary courtesy Jay Warrick). 2nd item - 1875 autobiography penned by Chaplain Thomas Dwight Witherspoon (136 pages total). Witherspoon writes the autobiography from Petersburg, VA to his children. Insight is given to events that shaped Witherspoon's life and philosophy. Early in the diary, Witherspoon discusses the efforts of his wealthy uncle to leave provision upon death for all of his uncle's slaves to go to Liberia in Africa and set up a functioning society there. Unfortunately, it was not successful and may have influenced Witherspoons views on slavery for the remainder of his life. In his early years, Witherspoon's schooling was fairly extensive in Latin, Greek, and the Classics. He also shared sicknesses of youth including typhoid fevor and being bitten by a poisonous snake. He decided his senior year to seek the Gospel ministry as a profession. Regarding the Civil War, Witherspoon goes into depth on the causes of it and his views regarding the conflict.
Condition:
Both diaries in overall very good condition. It appears the 1862 diary may have incurred some water damage in the front of the diary and there appears to be traces of earlier writings, as this diary begins on page 35.

- CA. 1893 GREAT AMERICAN COWBOY RACE
CA. 1893 GREAT AMERICAN COWBOY RACE - BUFFALO BILLThis is an outstanding, historic and rare photograph showing the start of the Chadron-Chicago Cowboy Race to the Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, June 12th, 1893, by photographer Foss & Eason Chadron, Nebraska. The large format photograph is marked in the negative, “Ready for the start Charon-Chicago Cowboy RACE June 13th, 1893, Photographed by Foss & Eason Chadron Neb.” The great 1,000-mile endurance race from Chadron, Nebraska to Chicago, Illinois is considered the undisputed “Great American Cowboy Race” that started June 13, 1893 with a field of nine riders, each with two horses. On the morning of June 27, 1893, the riders made it to Chicago and the “1,000 Mile Tree” at the site of the Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, but the winning order was disputed. The racer was apparently the idea of Chadron jokester John G. Maher. Seven of the nine riders finished, with some traveling up to ninety miles a day. Nebraska badman “Doc” Middleton was an rider. John Berry won, riding Sandy and Poison, but was disqualified for having prior knowledge of the route. Chadron officials declared Joe Gillespie and Charlie Smith winners. Upon research of this race, and this image, none of the original photographs of the start, such as our example offered in this lot, are in the public market. The image is light and the large card has some loss to the edge. Provenance: From the Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection. Measures 9 7/8” by 8”.

169. CLASSIC PITCAIRN ISLAND CANE -CA. 1900 -REDWOOD RI...169. Classic Pitcairn Island Cane -Ca. 1900 -Redwood right fist handle on its coconut wood shaft with a light colored, flush set and joining wood washer collar and a metal ferrule. The fist seems to hold something, which could be an egg, symbol of life, or a book-scroll for the eternal Bible. This cane is typical for the Pitcairn Islands and shows character and the innate driving force that personalizes good folk-art. It grew old beautifully with a rich patina that gives the piece the appearance of having a dark color. -H. 3” x 1 ½”, O.L. 37” -$200-$300 -For the interesting story regarding the Pitcairn Island Canes, I refer to Francis H. Monek’s book, Canes Through The Ages, page 282 and 283. Hereby his original description: “A cane carved by Ivan Christian of Pitcairn Island in the South Seas, South Pacific is a most desirable collectible. He was a descendant of Fletcher Christian, an officer on board the British ship Bounty. The handle of the cane I have has a black insertion in the middle of the surface, which is a piece of the Bounty rudder. Fletcher Christian led the mutiny against Captain William Bligh in 1789 and set Bligh and his 18 loyal men adrift in a small boat near the Fiji Islands in April 1789. Christian took the Bounty back to Tahiti where he left some mutineers who were later captured by the British. With eight shipmates, six native men, and twelve native women he sailed to Pitcairn, a rocky island only 3 miles square and with no fresh water. He burned and sank the Bounty on January 23, 1790 to prevent any of his group from leaving and to keep their island hideaway a secret. Having no water but rain water to drink and no animals except a few goats, their assumed island paradise soon became a prison. Few ships would stop there as they had to anchor two miles out and risk heavy swells in a rowboat to reach the island. The population increased. In 1939 it numbered 215, but would be decimated every few years by ptomaine poisoning, lockjaw, measles, etc. All they had to trade were oranges and canes, which they made from wood on uninhabited Henderson Island 100 miles away. They could not grow any potatoes or vegetables as large swarms of black rats ate up everything before the natives could pick it. I fortunately have one of their canes and it is displayed herein. The relic of the Bounty rudder in the cane is like a modern reliquary.”

TROPICAL WOOD CLASSIC PITCAIRN ISLAND CANE-Ca. 1890 -Plain turned tropical wood knob with a substantial flattened top and well-proportioned longer stem on an ebony shaft with three-stacked contrasting wood washer’s collar and a horn ferrule. Beautifully simple and simply beautiful, this cane has allure and charm. Its profile speaks for a better Pictairn island origin and the warming patina on the knob for at least a century of age. -For the interesting story regarding the Pitcairn Island Canes, I refer to Francis H. - 12TH C. CHINESE SONG DYNASTY JUN WARE
12TH C. CHINESE SONG DYNASTY JUN WARE POTTERY DISHEast Asia, China, Song Dynasty, ca. 1127 to 1279 CE. A stunning ceramic dish presenting a ring-form foot, a shallow basin, and a flared rim, all enveloped in a lustrous glaze of gorgeous hues of violet, lavender, periwinkle, and light blue. The colors swirl dreamily across the vessel, beautifully complementing its elegant form. The celadon gains its blue color from the use of straw ash; this was created in the Jun kilns of Yuzhou City. Varying the temperature in kilns, a technique known as Yacoubian, changes the color greatly. The most prized examples, like this one, have crimson and purple splashes. The unglazed foot gives the bowl its date; during the Song Dynasty, before this was made, the foot would also have been glazed. Archaeological excavations in the 1950s and 1960s in Yuzhou City revealed over a hundred kilns, all involved in the production of these beautiful pieces. Size: 13.875" in diameter x 2.375" H (35.2 cm x 6 cm)
Bowls like this were some of China's most important exports during the Song period and were widely imitated in Korea and Japan. The body was thrown on a potter's wheel and the color of the glaze that covers all but its foot comes from iron oxides fired in a reducing atmosphere. These objects were fired in "dragon kilns," long brick tunnels that rose up a slope, to provide slow and even heating. Archaeologists estimate that up to 25,000 vessels would be made at once in the largest of these kilns! The market for bowls like these were the scholar-gentleman class, sometimes known as the literati; these were made for everyday use, religious ceremonies (placing offerings on altars, for example), and sometimes were buried with their owners. Their beauty spawned legends; for example, the few that made their way to Europe were sometimes turned into goblets with the aid of metal components because of a belief that their glaze would change color in the presence of poison.

- FINE ZAPOTEC POTTERY DOUBLE JAR W/ INCISED
FINE ZAPOTEC POTTERY DOUBLE JAR W/ INCISED DEITIES TL'D...Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico, Oaxaca, Zapotec, Monte Alban IIIa, ca. 200 to 500 CE. A rare and fine example of a hand-built pottery vessel containing two conjoined cylindrical tubes with a mutual base. The broad composition shows each buffware vessel joined via the upper rim and lower base as well as deep interior cavities that perhaps held ink, pigment, or poison. Incised on the front of the righthand vessel is a glyph representing the deity 2 J (also known as the goddess Itzpapalotl) with a four-lobed framework and surrounded by petite circles. The front of the left-hand vessel exhibits an abstract anthropomorphic face, with a large mouth and narrow eyes, representing the deity 1 Tiger. Faint remains of red pigment are visible across scattered areas and allude to how attractive this was at one time. Size: 3.3" W x 3.875" H (8.4 cm x 9.8 cm)
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report is available for $50 to the buyer. Please contact us to request.

Yugoslavian/American, 1942-1990
Mirror Veil , 1979
Mixed media, signed, titled, and dated to interior
Sheets of glass, layered and constructed in an architectural, modernist manner to sequester small rocks, a mirrored backdrop to the shadowbox containment.
Yuri Schwebler was born in Nazi-occupied Yugoslavia in 1943. His early childhood was clearly marked by the times, his father facing all from conscription into the Wehrmacht to the tortures of a Russian Labor camp, which would lead to the breaking of both his legs. Once the family was reunited in 1956, they wasted no time in emigrating, Schwebler and both younger sisters in tow, to Delaware.
Fresh out of Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College), Schwebler was drafted in to the United States Army Reserve in 1965. After his discharge, he started using the anglicized name George Schwebler. By 1967, he moved to Washington, D.C., and in 1970, moved with his wife, Joanne Hedge, to Marin County, California, and worked briefly at the Sausalito Art Center. When the marriage dissolved in March 1970, he spent two months at the Mendocino State Hospital before returning to Washington, D.C. He moved to New York in 1980, and stopped making art around 1981.
His CV in “The Studio” catalog staked Schwebler's roots in DC, complimented by numerous gallery exhibitions as well as exhibitions at the Phillips Collection and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. He earned an NEA fellowship in 1975, a sculpture installed at ArtPark in 1976, and was included in the 10th Paris Biennale of Young Artists in 1977. In a 1981 exhibition in the Hudson River Museum, Schwebler recreated art studios of sculptors Alexander Calder (In the Tracks of Calder), Piet Mondrian, Alberto Giacometti (Giacometti’s Table [Where Painting Meets Sculpture], 1981), David Smith and Constantin Brancusi, with his own artistic sensibilities.
Schwebler died at age 47 on March 3, 1990, in Marlborough, New York by suicide and carbon monoxide poisoning. He was survived by his partner, artist Enid Sanford, his mother Eva (née Lasi) Schwebler, and two sisters. His work was part of the posthumous retrospective art exhibition, Yuri Schwebler: The Spiritual Plan (2020) curated by John James Anderson at the American University Museum.

HERCULES AND LICHAS bronze, dark brown patina, signed 'Delafontaine, bronzier' and with Canova signature to the base27cm wide, 42cm high, 20.5cm deep‘The importance and value of Canova's art is now recognized as holding in balance the last echo of the Ancients and the first symptom of the restless experimentation of the modern age.’ - Art Historian Giuseppe PavanelloAntonio Canova (1757- 1822) was a prominent Italian Neoclassical sculptor, mostly celebrated for his work in marble. Canova began producing works in marble before the age of ten, before enrolling in the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia around 1772. Canova won numerous prizes and received several commissions, which led to him opening his own studio at Calle Del Traghetto at S. Maurizio in 1779. From this point, Canova travelled to and worked in several European cities, before returning to Italy in 1816, where he continued to work until his death in 1822.Due to his success, Canova received many commissions and no longer had to rely on funerary monuments for large-scale work, and could explore large freestanding classical figures, such as his ‘Hercules and Lichas’ from 1795- 1815, commissioned by Onorato Gaetani dell’Aquila d’Aragona. Often inspired by antiquity, Canova was known for reviving classical works in a way that avoided melodrama of antiquity and the artificiality of Neoclassicism. The tale of Hercules and Lichas is recounted in book IX of Ovid’s Metamorphoses: Hercules puts on a shirt poisoned with Nessus’ blood, and, driven mad by the pain, thinks that his servant Lichas is to blame. Lichas tried to explain his innocence, however Hercules threw him into the waves of the Euboic Sea. The original statue is now conserved in the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome.Canova is often regarded as the greatest Neoclassical artist, which is evidenced by his series of important international patrons including Napoleon Bonaparte, and Popes Pius VI and VII. His work is held in many institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Louvre in Paris, and the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.
