SMITH CAVALRY CARBINE, .50 CALSMITH CAVALRY CARBINE, .50 CAL A Civil War-era Smith Carbine made for the U.S. Cavalry by Poultney & Trimble of Baltimore. The firearm utilizes a unique break-action mechanism which was coupled with a propietary paper-cartridge with an additional rubber gasket to complete the gas seal. This particular carbine is in overall fine condition, with some recoil cracks in the stock, a missing tang screw, and some frosting just forward of the chamber. The finish is largely worn off with maybe 60% remaining and some minor pitting around the percussion nipple and hammer. S/N: 7531, Caliber: .50 Cal BP, BBL: 21 1/2", OAL: 39"

Clean bore strong rifling good action. All appropriate markings on lockplate tang and receiver very clear. Barrel and frame have even dark patina. Stock has horizontal crack at wrist wood missing on both sides of upper tang. Retaining screw on upper tang is stripped. Only 3 000 of this gun ever made!

Walnut buttstock and forearm. Sling swivel on the bottom of buttstock. Front forearm band is missing. Third model is a very rare carbine to find. They are distinguishable by the breechblock which has no pivot. And the forearm which slops differently to the barrel than a fourth model. The same breechblock as a second model. Condition: All metal has been lightly cleaned and has some brown staining mixed with pitting. Buttstock with some nicks and dings and has been re-finished.
