Very early printing of Martin Luther's Canon of the Mass, set in Guttenberg type. Highlighted with red and black printing. Folium XX to folium XXIII contains the EXSULTET IAM ANGELICA TURBA with printed notes on the music staff, the opening words of the Praeconium, or Hymn of Praise, sung by the deacon in celebration of Christ's Resurrection after the Lumen Christi procession has entered the church for the solemn service of the Easter vigil. The book is bound in hand tooled pigskin in a renaissance binding with two clasps. Decoration on both front and back boards. Spine features raised bands.

Ackerman praises this type of stool for its comfort and stability (see P. Agius, ed., Ackerman's Regency Furniture and Interiors , London, 1984, p. 88).
Condition
Both missing areas of carving and molding. Some carving is plaster not wood. Minor staining and areas of over-painting. Sound frames, will need to be re-upholstered.
