A Pennsylvania land grant on parchmentA Pennsylvania land grant on parchment dated 7-16-1806, granting a property in Venango County named "Fortland" to Alexander Baring & others, and signed as Pennsylvania governor by Founding Father and Signer of the Declaration of Independence Thomas McKean (1734-1817). McKean was the delegate to the Second Continental Congress whose note brought his fellow Delaware delegate Caesar Rodney riding back to the Congress, to break the deadlock and swing Delaware's vote for American independence. This document was also signed by the first Deputy Secretary of the Commonwealth, James Trimble (1755-1837), and by Timothy Matlack (1736-1829), another of the Founding Fathers who wrote out the formal copy of the Declaration of Independence.

White for a tract of land also located in southwestern Ohio dated 1 February 1843 copied from the original patent issued by Thomas Jefferson dated 8 March 1803. Framed 16 x 20 in.Following the Revolutionary War some of the soldiers were compensated for their military service by being presented with patents for land. These lands were granted primarily in what we now know as western Pennsylvania Ohio Indiana and Illinois. The original land grant and "true" copy featured in this lot are both examples of documents presented to soldiers for their service after the war. Out of the tract of land granted to Lieutenant Evans which was located in Union and Oak Run Townships of Madison County a part was purchased by the consignor's ancestor Joseph Bell and a portion of that Joseph Bell tract came to be known as the "Bell Farm." The lot is accompanied by photocopies of manuscript documents regarding the tract of land acquired by the Bell Family plus aerial shots of the land.? The map shows the area of the former British colonies the Eastern seaboard the Mississippi basin with New Mexico the Caribbean islands the South American coast and Central America with inset maps of Baffin and Hudson's Bay and part of California and an engraved cartouche depicting British merchants at port with a ship in the background being loaded with cargo by black slaves. Framed and matted. 51 x 56 inches.

The landing of the original forty eight settlers of Marietta led by Rufus Putnam on April 7, 1788. They are shown with local Native Americans on the east bank of the Muskingum River with Ft. Harmar in the background and the confluence of the Ohio River on the left. Pictured on the bank is the "Adventure Galley", one of two flatboats which brought the settlers. Areas of inpainting, primarily along lines of crazing and flaking along the sky and the trees on the right as well as some scattered areas along the river and the figures. Rebacked on canvas over board and varnished. Frame is most likely original with regilding. 23"h. 29"w., framed, 30"h. 37"w.
Sala Bosworth moved with his family to Marietta, Ohio in 1818, afterwards becoming an artist, known primarily as a portrait painter. He and Charles Sullivan were commissioned to illustrate Dr. Samuel P. Hildreth's 1848 book "Pioneer History of the Ohio Valley". At that time Dr. Hildreth commissioned this painting from Bosworth. Since then it has descended in the Hildreth and Putnam families as follows: Commissioned by Dr. Samuel P. Hildreth (1783-1863), then to his daughter, Mary Ann Hildreth (1808-1842) who married Douglas Putnam (1806-1894), then to their son, Samuel Hildreth Putnam (1835-1911), then to his son, Benjamin Barnes Putnam (1871-1944), and to his son, Benjamin Hay Putnam (1896-1984), and then to Benjamin Hay Putnam, Jr. (1925-2007). One of Bosworth's murals remains in the Unitarian Church in Marietta, titled "Christ Weeping over Jerusalem".

A Pennsylvania land grant on vellumA Pennsylvania land grant on vellum dated 5-24-1796, granting a property in Lycoming County named "Langland" to William Bingham, and signed by Pennsylvania governor and Founding Father Thomas Mifflin (1744-1800). Mifflin was a Philadelphia merchant who was expelled by the Quakers for joining the Continental Army during the American Revolution, in which he served first as one of George Washington's aide-de-camps and then as Quartermaster General. After the Revolution he was the last President of Pennsylvania, succeeding Benjamin Franklin, a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, in the course of which he was a Signer of the Constitution, and then the first Governor of Pennsylvania. This document was also signed by the first Deputy Secretary of the Commonwealth, James Trimble (1755-1837), and by one Nathaniel Irwin.
