A very elaborate and detailed fore-edge painting interpreted as "The Ruins of Villa Merenas, Tivoli," after Richard Wilson R.A. (1713-1782), showing the ruins in the background with people and general panorama of the countryside. Red morocco leather with an embossed center design surrounded by a much-detailed floral gilt encasement. Gilt titling on the spine has the title in the second compartment with floral filling the others. The first free paper is covered with the provenance of the owner, dated 1841 and on the verso is the information regarding the fore-edge painting. (2), [311pp], (2).

SNOWDEN FAMILY PHOTOS AND SLAVE DOCUMENT, MEMPHIS TN AN...Archive of photographs and 1 slave document related to the Snowden family of Tennessee. 1st item: 1848 Bill of Sale recording the sale by J.B. (John Bayard) Snowden of "my negro boy Jack about fourteen years of age (say 14)" for the sum of four hundred fifty dollars" to A.W. Van Leer. Witnessed in Davidson County (Nashville) Tennessee by Robert B. Castleman. Mounted in a small natural wood frame. 2nd item: Steel engraving plate with circa 1860 image of John Bayard (J.B.) Snowden (prominent Nashville dry goods merchant, 1808-1863). 10" x 7". 3rd and 4th items: Two (2) Cabinet card photographs, depicting Annie Overton Brinkley Snowden (1845-1923), by Fredericks Portrait Gallery, New York, circa 1890-1900; and an unidentified gentleman thought to be one of her sons, by P. Gurney & Son, New York, undated. Each measures 6 1/2" x 4 1/2". 5th item: Photograph of a young man from the Snowden family, possibly John Bayard Snowden II (1881-1968) with hand painted mat dated 1900 illustrating pennants of Sewanee and their opposing football teams, with scores of games for that year. 12" x 10 1/2" framed. 6th item: Reproduction photograph of Col. Robert Bogardus Snowden at a Civil War Reunion with others including Col. John Overton II. A note en verso identifies six of the men and states the original photo was taken at the Inter State Drill in Memphis in 1895. Framed, 12" x 10 1/2". 7th item: 1960s era page from a magazine picturing Snowden family descendant May Todd and her husband standing at the Snowden mansion, Annesdale, in front of a portrait of Robert Bogardus Snowden. 8th item: Large framed photograph of Col. Robert Bogardus Snowden (1836-1909) in his Civil War uniform. Sight - 21" x 17". Frame - 36" x 31". 9th item: William Woollett (English, 1735-1785) engraving entitled Snowden Hill, and the adjacent Country in North Wales, after a painting by Richard Wilson. This print is one of the set, Six Views in North and South Wales, all after Wilson, published by John Boydell in 1775. Housed under glass in a wooden frame. Sight -15 1/2" x 20 1/2". Frame - 21" x 26 1/4". Also shown with this lot is an unrelated page "English and American Art Gallery" found with the engraving plate and used as a protective covering. It is in poor condition but available to the winning bidder. Note: these items descended in the prominent Snowden family of Memphis, Tennessee. Their historic mansion, Annesdale, which still stands in the city's Midtown area, was a wedding gift in 1868 to Col. Robert Bogardus Snowden (1836-1909) and Annie Overton Brinkley (1845-1923) from her father, tycoon Robert Campbell Brinkley, and it remained in the family for more than a century. Col. Robert Bogardus Snowden was the son of John Bayard Snowden (1808-1863) of Nashville and had a son by the same name. Several other items that descended in the family, including silver and paintings, are also included in this auction.
Condition:
1st item: Not examined out of frame; possibly glued to mat board. Toning, foxing and loss to one corner. 2nd item: Scratches and wear/oxidation to front of plate, rust to reverse. 3rd and 4th items: some light foxing, toning, light grime. 5th item: light toning, overall very good condition. 8th item: Scattered foxing and surface irregularities to photo. 9th item: Not examined out of frame; light foxing, even toning, and 1 1/2" area of liquid staining to upper right quadrant.
