Theora Hamblett (American/MississippiTheora Hamblett (American/Mississippi 1893-1977) "Exploded Red Butterfly Wing", 1959, oil on panel, signed and dated lower right "T. Hamblett '59", with artist's copyright lower right, inscribed lower left "#56B", 20" x 22". Presented in a molded giltwood frame. Provenance: Purchased from Southside Gallery, Oxford, Mississippi, in February 2002, by a member of the artists family. A copy of the bill of sale accompanies this lot. This lot appears to be a version of the painting "Exploded Butterfly Wing (56)" illustrated on page number 81 in Theora Hamblett Paintings, by William S. Haynie and Ed Meek, University Press of Mississippi, Jackson, 1975. Concerning the butterfly imagery, the artist recollects "One day I walked out on the porch and sat down in the porch swing. As I sat down, I saw a beautiful red butterfly in a background of green. The unusual part of the butterfly was the upper left wing which appeared to be exploded. The color red is symbolic of God. The butterfly is a symbol of the soul. But why did the butterfly have the exploded wing?"
