Lined and restretched on old stretcher, stretcher marks, repaired hole at center with paint loss, crackle, abrasions at edges, retouch at cheek, clothing, background, less than 10 percent of surface affected; frame resurfaced, losses to composition.

JOSEPH REED, ALS, DURING THE PA LINE MUTINY, 1781 Joseph Reed (1741-1785, Statesman, Aide de Camp of Washington) autograph letter, signed, as President of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania, dated at Philadelphia, January 25, 1781, to Brig. Gen. Anthony Wayne at Trenton; 2 1/2 pp., folio, 11 3/4 x 7 1/8 in. Reed tells Wayne, "We have just received a fresh Demand from Mr. Deane for Shirts & Shoes," expressing exasperation because the articles had already been sent in an effort to appease the desperate soldiers in winter camp at Jockey Hollow. He asks Wayne and other officers to do all they can to distribute supplies. A postscript alludes to the reorganization of the PA Line, including relocation of various regiments.
