INDIANA JACQUARD COVERLET. Matthew Rattray Wayne County 1851. Double weave with center seam. Floral centerfield with floral basket side borders and Rattray's typical birds feeding young foot border and eagle corner block. 85'' x 96''. Scottish-born Rattray (1796-1872) arrived in Richmond in 1822 and wove coverlets into the 1860s. Wear on top edge. Loss to bottom fringe.

Marked "Two years after the ratification of a treaty of peace between the Confederate States and the United States, The Confederate States of America will pay to the bearer on demand Fifty Dollars/ Richmond, Feb. 17th, 1864/ Keatinge & Ball Columbia, SC" and signed in two places. Measures approximately 3-1/2" x 7-1/4". Good overall condition and has been housed in a plastic sheath. Provenance: Private Virginia collector.
