A. Davidson, Secretary. Housed in an ebonized and gilt wood frame. Plate: 22 1/2" H x 18 3/4" W. Sight: 23 3/4" H x 19 3/4" W. Framed: 31 1/4" H x 27 1/2" W. Note: Pendleton acted as Lee's artillery chief during the Civil War and became chairman of the Lee Memorial Association afterwards, dedicating himself to preserving Lee's "sacred memory." Ulysses Samuel Grant (1822 - 1885), a native of Ohio, was made Lieutenant-General by President Lincoln and put in command of the Union Army in the American Civil War. His successes led to his election as president in 1868. Robert E. Lee (1807 - 1870) was the general in command of the Confederate Army. He was ruthlessly pursued by General Grant, who forced him to retreat from his defense of Richmond, Virginia, in 1865.
