DIEGO RIVERA MURAL STUDY DRAWING OF GIRL PLAYINGDiego Rivera (Mexico, 1886-1957) unframed chalk drawing depicting a girl playing or working with a block or brick. Measures 14" in height with width of 16-7/8". No authentication paperwork accompanies this piece, however signature and style are consistent with those of known works by the artist. It does come with the original bill of sale where it was purchased by Jack Beny from Diego Rivera, & the document is signed by Diego Rivera himself. (See photographs). Provenance: from the estate of a prominent Texas collector, who acquired it from Jack Beny, a friend of the collector. Furthermore, the consignor was known to not only to have collected quite an amazing assortment of notable art, but to have befriended a vast majority of the artists of whose work was acquired, including Diego Rivera.
Diego María de la Concepción Juan Nepomuceno Estanislao de la Rivera y Barrientos Acosta y Rodríguez, known as Diego Rivera, was born on December 8, 1886 in Guanajuato, mexico to a well-to-do family, the son of Maria del Pilar Barrientos & Diego Rivera Acosta. Rivera had a twin brother named Carlos, who died when they were two years of age. He was said to have Converso ancestry (having ancestors who were forced to convert from Judaism to Catholicism), & considered Jewishness to be a dominant element throughout his life. He began drawing (on walls in his home) at the age of three, so his parents installed chalkboards & canvases on their home walls. From the age of 10, Rivera studied art at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City, but later studied in Europe. He witnessed first-hand the beginning of Cubism while he studied in Paris, but shifted his own work toward Post-impressionism around 1917. His third wife was Frida Kahlo, whom he divorced in 1939 after a tempestuous relationship. Diego Rivera became a prominent Mexican painter, with his large frescoes helping to establish the Mexican Mural Movement in Mexican art. Between 1922 and 1953, he painted murals among others in Mexico City, Chapingo, Cuernavaca, San Francisco, Detroit, & New York City. In 1931, a retrospective exhibition of his works was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Following a prolific career, Rivera died on November 24, 1957.
