- VERACRUZ MOLDED POTTERY SONRIENTE
VERACRUZ MOLDED POTTERY SONRIENTE FIGURAL WHISTLEPre-Columbian, Gulf Coast Mexico, Veracruz, Remojadas style, ca. 550 to 950 CE. An impressive example of a mold-made terracotta whistle in the form of a Sonriente or smiling face. The ancient figure showcases a traditional, wide smile revealing a row of teeth on a characteristically quasi-triangular shaped face with skillfully contoured facial planes, soft, billowy eyelids, and a curved nose, all flanked by a pair of long ears with annular earspools. Presenting a child-like body, the Sonriente stands with feet apart, wearing a skirt as she raises her outstretched arms, exposing both palms to the viewer. She is elaborately adorned, wearing a huge headdress featuring abstract designs, a thick, beaded necklace, and a short tunic with a tab-motif periphery. A pair of perforations at the top and verso of her headdress allow the figure to produce a beautiful, whistling sound! Size: 4.2" W x 5.7" H (10.7 cm x 14.5 cm)
Sonrientes are rare in Mesoamerican art and scholars suggest that they played a special role in Remojadas society due to their rarity. Why that smile? Some scholars believe that it was produced perhaps by ingesting alcoholic or hallucinogenic pulque, while others including Miller and Taube suggest that the smiling figures were actually performers. (See Miller and Taube, "The Gods and Symbols of Ancient Mexico and the Maya," London: Thames and Hudson, 1993, p. 10)

- VERACRUZ POTTERY ARTICULATED MALE
VERACRUZ POTTERY ARTICULATED MALE SONRIENTEPre-Columbian, Mexico, Gulf Coast, Veracruz, Classic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 900 CE. An outstanding terracotta figure known as a sonriente - meaning "smiling face" - depicted standing with separately made, articulated arms. Crowned by an elaborate headdress, his visage presents an endearing laughing face with almond shaped eyes, a petite nose, and a wide-open mouth revealing filed teeth, all enveloped in yellow pigmentation. A work of art in its own right - the sizeable headdress boasts a warm hue of red, as well as 2 applied spirals that flank a central feather motif. Just below, round ear ornaments incised with starburst patterns adorn the ears. The torso and limbs are also skillfully rendered with delineated fingers and toes. Additionally, the figure wears a 'beaded' necklace with a dangling pendant and lovely vest with a prominent frill, but the sculptor made certain that the figure's belly button and genitalia are revealed. Size: 6" W x 11.5" H (15.2 cm x 29.2 cm); 11.8" H (30 cm) on included custom stand.
Sonrientes or "smiling faces" are the most famous pottery figures from this period in Veracruz (known as Remojadas for its keystone archaeological site). Like this one, they depict wide, smiling, childlike faces, often with teeth showing. Smiling faces are very rare in Mesoamerican art, but in Remojadas and the surrounding area, these Sonrientes were apparently popular, leading to a mystery for archaeologists. Some have suggested that the smiles are the result of consuming the alcoholic beverage pulque or taking hallucinogenic drugs; others see them as representing performers.
