Salinas, who was In Spain at that time, visited him in the hospital, making sketches of Manolete before his death on August 29, 1947. This rendering represents one of Salinas' largest bullfighter paintings. The hospital sketches are now part of a private Texas collection.*

SALINAR-MOCHE REDWARE PORTRAIT VESSEL**OriginallySALINAR-MOCHE REDWARE PORTRAIT VESSEL**Originally Listed At $1200**
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Salinar culture, Salinar-Moche Transition period, ca. 500 BCE to 200 CE. A finely constructed pottery vessel displaying a broad portrait across the obverse. The expressive countenance presents almond-shaped eyes with white-painted pupils within puffy lids, slightly raised eyebrows decorated with incised, inward-pointing chevrons, a narrow nose with delineated nostrils and incised nasolabial folds, and a thin mouth above a petite chin. A crosshatched chinstrap across the lower part of the face spans from one finely detailed ear to the other and perhaps suggests this visage as being from that of a warrior or shaman. The rounded and elongated profile of the brow tapers gradually upwards to a pair of perforated suspension loops, and the top is surmounted by a cylindrical spout and a broad, flared rim. High burnishing marks create a smooth surface texture atop which the vibrant red-orange slip is applied. Size: 4.8" W x 7.8" H (12.2 cm x 19.8 cm)

SALINAR POTTERY STIRRUP VESSEL W/ ZOOMORPHS,SALINAR POTTERY STIRRUP VESSEL W/ ZOOMORPHS, TL TESTED**Originally Listed At $1200**
Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Salinar culture, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A striking ceramic stirrup vessel with a round body with flattened base, a thick stirrup handle, and a short, flaring spout with a thick lip. The body is a warm, creamy color made from a kaolin-based slip, with dramatic red motifs painted around its exterior, portraying four fierce, abstract toothy creatures chasing each other around the body of the vessel. Salinar potters were some of the earliest in Peru and were related to the Chavin and Cupisnique traditions; they invented the modeled-figure spout-and-bridge bottle style that their cultural descendants the Moche would later perfect. Size: 6" W (15.2 cm); 8" H (20.3 cm) on included custom stand.
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) and has been found to be ancient and/or of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

BIRGER SANDZEN (1871-1954) OIL ON CANVASBIRGER SANDZEN (1871-1954) OIL ON CANVAS DATED 1929Birger Sandzen (Kansas, 1871-1954)Golden Aspens (1929)The vertical format oil on canvas from the Sandzen's most desirable Middle Period is signed and dated lower right front.Paintings from, basically, 1910 to 1930 are considered more significant for their robust palette of unique and intense colors applied in 100s of broad, confident, one-and-done strokes of high-relief impasto, resulting in canvases that seem as much chiseled as painted.Numbered 2315 in the Sandzén card catalogue, and titled as above, the artist's notes reference a local Art Association's interest in ''acquiring another painting.'' Indeed, The Lindsborg Progress for Thursday, June 12, 1930 details the transaction: ''The purchase of Golden Aspens, on which members of the Art Association have set their hearts since its first showing here with the Sandzen exhibition early in the year, marks a significant change for the advancement of art in Salina, according to the Salina Journal. The picture is a fine example of the best work of the famous artist - strength of color and form, individuality. Mr. Sandzen has ardent admirers in Salina, both as an artist, and personally; he has done far more than any other person to make the beginnings of the Salina Art Association, a success, and it is fitting that a picture of his creation should be the first real stride forward, taken by the association in acquiring a permanent art collection of museum proportions.''The canvas measures 40.5 x 30 inches, framed size of 46 x 36 inches.Very good condition, professionally restored in limited areas and re-lined by Western Center For The Conservation Of The Arts in Denver, Colorado, March of 1999.Scattered areas of in painting, primarily in the upper 10 inches of the composition with a few more touches down the right side, and in the lower right area. One touch along the left where sky and horizon meet. approximately 5% or less of the total surface area with inpainting, 95% or more being original and untouched as shown in images.Overall very good condition, free from surface soiling, no paint loss, punctures, chipping, or other issues. The stretchers are original with pencil inscriptions in the artist's hand.Provenance: The property of a rural Kansas public library. Acquired directly from the artist.
