- ANDREW JACKSON COFFIN HANDBILL AND POLITICAL
ANDREW JACKSON COFFIN HANDBILL AND POLITICAL CARTOON1st item: The New Hampshire Journal, Oct. 20 1828, newspaper with a "Coffin Handbill" presidential campaign broadside attacking Andrew Jackson on the front page. 4 pp. Note: The Presidential campaign of 1828 between John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson was one of the most vicious in American history, with character assaults on both sides. This woodcut broadside, one of a series issued by editor and publisher John Binns of Philadelphia, charged "The Hero of the Battle of New Orleans" with what the Adams campaign considered an unjust action during the War of 1812. Jackson had let stand a decision to execute six Tennessee militiamen who left their unit near Mobile. Their defense argued that the men had left their unit under the mistaken belief that their enlistments had expired, only to return after realizing their error. They were, however, found guilty and executed, with Jackson refusing to intervene. (Ref. William C. Cook, "The Coffin Handbills-America's First Smear Campaign", Imprint, vol. 27, no. 1, Spring 2002, pp. 23-37). 2nd item: Related hand colored political cartoon, "the Pedlar and his Pack", 1828, a satire on the "coffin handbill" campaign initiated by John Binns (caricatured here with Henry Clay, John Quincy Adams, and a series of coffins on his back). 17" x 11 1/2".
Condition:
Newspaper: toning and fading, some dark creases, areas of loss to top edge of front page, 1" area of loss to center along crease, 1/4" hole upper left, scattered small tears, some possible repairs. Calhoun, and William Wirt (14" x 11"); and "On the Way to Arabay," another National banking related cartoon, circa 1836, depicting Jackson, Martin van Buren, and Nicholas Biddle; the title is a response to Jackson's controversial comment that he would rather live in a country like Arabia than one like the United States where an institution as powerful as the Bank existed (14 1/2" x 11").

- 1907 1ST EDITION MARK TWAIN "A HORSE'S
1907 1ST EDITION MARK TWAIN "A HORSE'S TALE"Featured in this lot is a 1907, First Edition, "A Horse's Tale" by Mark Twain. "A Horse's Tale" is one of Mark Twain’s lighter writings about different perspectives on life, mainly from the vantage point of Soldier Boy - renowned Buffalo Bill’s horse, as well as an orphaned little girl, Cathy. The setting for this novel by Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens), is a fictional frontier outpost with the U.S. 7th Cavalry. When the general's orphaned niece arrives, Buffalo Bill takes her under his wing and ultimately lends her Soldier Boy, so they may seek adventure together. Twain uses the friendship between the girl and the horse as the basis for his eventual indictment of the barbarism of Spanish bullfighting. Filled with sharp humor, satire, and sadness, the book deals with the impressions in life, the reasons for existing, all from the perspective of a little girl and her horse. A Horse’s Tale is a must read by both Mark Twain fans and people who enjoy a masterfully written story with hidden elements. Samuel Langhorne Clemens, known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. He was praised as the "greatest humorist the United States has produced", and William Faulkner called him "The Father of American Literature". This red clothbound stamped hardcover book is in very nice condition with very slight scuffing to cover edges. Intact pages exhibit age tanning, very slight foxing, and no other obvious marring noted. Measures 8.25"L x 5.25"W x .75"D approximately.*

- 19TH C. JAPANESE SILK SCROLL BY UKITA
19TH C. JAPANESE SILK SCROLL BY UKITA IKKEIUkita Ikkei (Japanese, 1795-1859). A beautiful 19th century silk painting mounted as a scroll by Ukita Ikkei, a significant figure in the revival of yamato-e painting, a revered Japanese form of court painting. The distinctly Japanese birdseye view composition features a nobleman who is reading to a young child, the pair sitting on tatami mats within an edifice. Petite pine trees, bamboo, and plum blossoms are presented in the landscape behind the building. The artist's signature and red stamp seal are on the lower right. The painting has an upper and lower, tone-on-tone golden floral border and is surrounded by a gold on mauve floral border. Size of painting: 35.5" L x 15.75" W (90.2 cm x 40 cm) Size of full scroll: 46.5" L x 21.125" W (118.1 cm x 53.7 cm)
According to Patricia J. Graham's article in Grove Art Online, Ukita Ikkei "was an official painter for the imperial court in Kyoto, a waka (31-syllable form) poet and a fervent loyalist, supporting the re-establishment of imperial rule against the Tokugawa shogunate. Ikkei was active at the close of the Edo period (1600–1868). He expressed his political opinions in his paintings, which, though closely modelled on Yamatoe paintings of the Heian (794–1185) and Kamakura (1185–1333) periods (see Japan §VI 3., (iii)), included explicit satires on the contemporary political scene. As a result of his paintings and a speech he wrote questioning the future of the country, he was imprisoned in 1858. Released in 1859, he died shortly afterwards from an illness he had contracted in prison."
Ukita Ikkei's "Courtiers Admiring a Waterfall" scroll painting sold for $1700 at Christie's New York - September 18, 2008 lot 205A.

Significant tear in lower left quadrant as shown in photos. Biography from the Archives of askART: The following biography has been provided by Rex Clawson, The Artist Rex Martin was born in 1929 in Dallas Texas. As a child his favorite artist was Jon Witcomb, an illustrator for the womens' magazines his mother subscribed to. In his teens he read Lust for Life and discovered Van Gogh, Gauguin and the Impressionists. All of his early paintings reflect these artists. In the late 1940's, Clawson won the "Texas Fellowship to the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center." There he became acquainted with modern art. Picasso and Braque were his greatest influences, along with Walt Kuhn, whose paintings were displayed at the art center. From there he traveled to Mexico to study and paint for a year at Morallia, and the art and culture of Mexico were a great influence on him. Rufino Tamayo was his favorite artist. He returned to Texas and in 1951 won first prize at the annual exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. In 1952 he was exhibited at the Knoedler Gallery NYC, in a show of Texas Artists. Thus encouraged, he moved to New York where he began to show regularly at the galleries. He had his first one man show at the Edwin Hewitt Gallery in 1955. In 1956 Vogue magazine reproduced a Clawson painting of a cat. Lincoln Kristen saw it and commissioned the artist to paint a cat for him. In 1963 the Royal Athena Gallery exhibited a Clawson painting entitled Nude in a Rocking Chair. Immediately the press announced it as a nude of President Kennedy and it got worldwide publicity. Finally, two U.S. Treasury agents entered the Gallery and acquired the painting, along with all photographs and negatives of it. The painting was never seen or heard of again. This was the start of Clawson's period of political satire. He had two one-man shows at the Royal Athena Gallery, 1963-1964 in which he satirized through art all the politics of the day. These shows received praise from the New York Times, Time Magazine, Art News, among others. Clawson had two one-man shows at New York's A.C.A. Gallery in 1968-1972. These shows took a light hearted look at social conditions and the decline of Religion in America. Since then Clawson has worked mostly on commissions from private collectors. Due to failing health he found it too difficult to produce enough paintings at one time to have another one-man show. Finally, in 2000 he entered the Cabrini Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in the East Village where the Nuns put him to work illustrating the Gospels for the Chapel. He has completed the three-year cycle of Sunday Gospels as well as saints' feast days. He now creates secular paintings from his bed side. Cabrini has created a Cyber Art Gallery through www.touchtown.org in which he now displays his works for a network of nursing and retirement homes. In 1977 the Hirshhorn Museum informed Clawson that it had acquired three of his paintings. In 1983 the Corcoran Gallery of Art informed him that they owned a Clawson drawing. Clawson's work is represented in the Butler Museum (Youngstown, Ohio) Krannert Museum (University of Illinois), University of Georgia Museum and the Smithsonian Art Museum. One man shows- Hewitt Gallery-1955, Royal Athena Gallery 1963-1964, A.C.A. Gallery 1968-1972. A note from the artist's niece, Audra Renfer: My uncle passed away from cancer on October 18, 2007. ADOLPHE WILLETTE, FRENCH (1857 - 1926), LE JAMEDI (ON JANUARY), 1892, OIL ON WOOD PANEL, 14 1/2"H X 18"WAdolphe Willette, French, (1857 - 1926) Le Jamedi (on January), 1892, oil on wood panel Signed and dated lower right. Signed, titled, dated verso. Adolphe Léon Willette (30 July 1857, Châlons-sur-Marne – 4 February 1926, Paris) was a French painter, illustrator, caricaturist, and lithographer, as well as an architect of the famous Moulin Rouge cabaret. Willette ran as an "anti-semitic" candidate in the 9th arrondissement of Paris for the September 1889 legislative elections. Biography Willette studied for four years at the École des Beaux-Arts under Alexandre Cabanel. His graphical work ranged from dainty triviality or political satire: he made Pierrot an imaginary hero of France, and established Mimi Pinson as frail, lovable, and essentially good-hearted. He could also be bitter and fierce, a partisan of political ideas. The guillotine and the figure of Death appear in his caricatures.[1] At the time of the Dreyfus affair he was an anti-dreyfusard;[2] with Jean-Louis Forain, he moved to the political right.[3] Works The artist was a prolific contributor to the French illustrated press under the pseudonyms "Cémoi", "Pierrot", "Louison", "Bébé", and "Nox", but more often under his own name. He illustrated Melandri's Les Pierrots and Les Giboulles d'avril, Le Courrier français, and published his own Pauvre Pierrot and other works, in which he tells his stories in scenes in the manner of Busch. He decorated several "brasseries artistiques" with wall-paintings, stained glass, and so on notably Le Chat noir and La Palette d'or, and he painted the ceiling for La Cigale music hall. Willette contributed to the Salon des Cent and six of his posters were published in Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. A collection of his works was exhibited in 1888. His V'almy is in the Luxembourg, Paris.[1] Willette's characteristically fantastic Parce Domine was commissioned by Rodolphe Salis for Le Chat Noir in Montmartre. It was shown in the Franco-British Exhibition in 1908.[1][4] oil on wood panel Dimensions: 14 1/2"H x 18"W

- AFTER LEONARDO DI SER PIERO DA VINCI
AFTER LEONARDO DI SER PIERO DA VINCI (ITALY, 1452 - 1519) "Five grotesque heads, and three heads of men in profile" c.1510-20, sanguine ink on laid paper, in oak frame, matted and glazed, OS: 12 3/4" square, SS: 2 3/4" square. Copied from the original, late 19th c.
From the Royal Trust Collection: RCIN 912491.
"A drawing of eight heads; there are three grotesques in the top tier and three male heads, possibly all of the same subject, in the middle tier. In the lower tier are two heads of male and female grotesques, facing each other in profile.
As in RL 12493, these heads were copied from an extensive series of Leonardo's grotesques. The first two here are a study in morphological contrasts - a sloping forehead opposite a beetling brow, a long pointed nose opposite a flat nose and so on. The ape-like creature with a monstrous lip at upper right is an extreme example of Leonardo's ugly old women, and one of his few genuinely disturbing, rather than comic, inventions. The woman at lower right with an elaborate coiffure is yet another satire on aged vanity.
