Poems on Various Subjects by IsabellaPoems on Various Subjects by Isabella Oliver (Sharp) Containing an Early Poem "On Slavery" Carlisle: A. Loudon (Whitehall) 1805. Hardbound in leather 16mo entered as the Cumberland County's first book of poetry. First edition. An early female poet "On Slavery" is Oliver's only poem that focuses specifically on slavery though several other poems mention her sympathy for "all who wear the human form" and her belief that having anti-slavery sentiments was a virtue befitting women. Pennsylvania had enacted a gradual emancipation law in 1780 which meant that in 1805 there were still slaves in the state and notices for run- aways in Cumberland County papers. There is a long list of subscribers in the back of the book.
